Undo the bolts - slide the caliper away and remove the pads - you will need to loosen the cap on the brake fluid cylinder and push the brake pistons back into the housing to allow you to get the new pads in - use a BLUNT screwdriver or a good solid piece of wood. How do I change the front brake pads on a Nissan Micra?
lol undo the 2 allen key bolts on the back of the caliper and slide the caliper off take out the one old pad and use a G clamp 2 wind against the old pad 2 push the piston bk lol then ya can remove it and fit the new pads remember use Copper grease on the backs of the pads and grease the 2 allen key bolts (sliders) bosh it bk 2 gether nd do em up real tightHow do I change the front brake pads on a Nissan Micra?

I personally think brakes are important enough that owners should not DIY unless they watch it done properly a couple times first. New brake pads may not take the shape of worn rotor surfaces then they squeel and make noise. A proper brake job includes replacing the friction parts resurfacing the rotors and drums then %26quot;bedding in%26quot; where the brake pads are brought up to temp repeted hard stops. Then allowed to cool down. Many times it is best to have a brake fluid change preformed before pushing the caliper pistons inward driving dirty fluid back to the antilock brake pump and master CYL. Also Nissan Key Value pads installed at the dealer come with a one year warranty. Good Luck

I'm going to attempt it on the weekend. 10 points for most simple instructions plus any tools that I may need. Cheers. How to change my front brake pads on my 2005 vito 109cdi?
I did my Sprinter pads not very long ago, if they're anything like them - It is a Doddle!

Loosen wheel nuts, Jack up and axle stand. Wheel off.

Using a pry bar (sturdy screw driver) gently ease the pistons of the calliper back. Do not damage the disk doing this.

There are Allen bolts top and bottom of the calliper, slacken one, remove the other, swing out the calliper. Change pads, replace calliper and put in the bolt, tighten them both up. Wheel on, do other side.

Pump the pedal a few times before you move the vehicle.

I think the Allen heads are 7mm, it's not the usual size that is in a set. I had to get one special from Hal Fred's

Take a screw driver and wedge it between the rotor and brake pad and compress the piston in as he can so he can get the new brakes in as well.

Can you tell me how to change the brake pads on my '05 Honda Element?

Either get a service manual (like a Haynes or Chilton manual from an Auto Parts store) and follow the step by step instructions or take it to a reputable shop or the Honda dealer and pay to get the brake pads changed by a professional who knows what they're doing.

The worst system to figure-it-out and do-it-yourself on with no idea what you're doing is the brakes. Front or rear? I would definately suggest getting a manual if you are asking how to do it.

With that said, most disc brakes are similar, there is a disc squeezed by a caliper. The pads are held in the caliper and the caliper mounts to the hub via a carrier. There should be two bolts that hold the caliper to it's carrier. On some cars you can just remove one bolt and the caliper will swing away from the disc and you can remove the old pads and install the new ones. There will probably be springs in there with the pads, so before you remove the old pads, make a note or take a few pictures of how the pads and springs fit in the caliper. You may also want to use a special lubricant between the caliper and pad to help quiet sqeeking and sqealing.

-open the hood and open the cover for the brake fluid resevior

-jack up the car and put wheel chocks behind the other tires

    -remove the wheel

-remove one or both of the caliper bolts

-separate the caliper from the disc

    -take picture of cliper set-up

    -remove old pads and springs

-use wood block and c-clamp to push caliper piston back into caliper (make note not to push so much that brake fuid comes back out the resevior)

    -install new pads/spring/pad lubricant

    -reinstall caliper on carrier

-reinstall bolt(s) and tighten to factory specs.

    -reinstall wheel

Cost of changing brake pads on VW?

How much would it cost if i just wanted to change my brake pads on my VW Jetta, 2008. I will buy the brakes separately, so i want to know price of installing them. anyone have an estimate??

    thanks!

(full points for best answer...)Cost of changing brake pads on VW?
The cost will vary depending upon the hourly charge for labour; shop rates vary from shop to shop.. it will also depend upon what you need to have done.

To replace brake pads only, you should expect to pay between .5 to .8 of an hour charge x times the posted hourly rate for labour. It is also quite possible that you may need additional work; the rotors might need to be machined or even replaced, depending upon the amount of runout on the rotor (yeah, its possible that you might not need to do anything but replace pads, but given the material OEM brake pads are made up, that's unlikely). If you need to machine the rotors (or replace the rotors), expect to pay at least 1.0 hours of labour for replacement, up to 1.8 to machine rotors, in addition to the basic charge of of replacing the pads.

Brakes are something that you don't economize at: a quality brake job is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Your safety is something you don't want to gamble at, inferior brake pads, poor workmanship, will effect the braking distance and wear characteristics of the brake job. On my own every day driver, (also a front wheel drive compact car), I don't even machine rotors, I replace them because they will almost always be at or below minimum safe thickness after machining. And, dare I say, a good brake job will include new mounting hardware, anti-rattle clips (if your car is equipped), cleaning and lubrication of the caliper sliding pionts, etc... I've seen too many %26quot;cheap%26quot; brake jobs where the customer wasn't happy with they got: noisy brakes, %26quot;grabbing%26quot; brakes, brakes that wore unevenly or wore out very quickly and steering that pulled from one side to the other when braking. I've redone countless %26quot;cheap%26quot; brakes over the last 30+ years; I'm amazed at the poor quality of workmanship and/or materials that exist in automotive service market place.

There are places that you can economize on your vehicle; a brake job isn't one of them. I have a cardinal rule: if it rolls (drives) on the street, several things have to be in top shape, no matter what the car looks like: it has to steer, (means good tires, alignment, steering linkage), it has to brake (brakes that don't fade under hard usage, stop straight and don't pull, stop in the shortest distance possible and still be stable), and you have to be able to see: clear windscreen (windshield), mirrors that work, lights that work and are aimed correctly, defroster(s) that work etc.

As a practical matter, I agree with the previous writer that you don't go to a shop to have them install your supplied parts. The shop that installs your supplied part won't be responsible for the failure or wear on your part (as long as it can be proved that the installation was done correctly), so you could end up paying for labour twice...

Should you still decide to purchase the part yourself; don't buy the cheapest brake pad you can find. You need to purchase at least an OEM grade of brake pad; brake pads are frequently sold in grades, the more expensive the brake pad, usually the better the material that the pad is made up. Also, in some brake pads, they include the mounting hardware with the pads as well as a anti vibration/noise shim, usually glued on the back side of the pad. For the most part, better quality pads are the only ones that include the hardware with the brake pad.

I know that some people might say I'm just ranting, not at all, I just want to you to understand that there's more to a quality brake job than just replacing the brake pad. A good job will save you money, time and perhaps, personal injury.

Hope this helps, a car nut.Cost of changing brake pads on VW?
Depends on where your at, but $75.00 to $95.00. Just one question for you though, when you go to a restaurant do you take food in and have the chef cook it for you so you do not have to pay full price? Shop owners have overhead that the profit they make on parts helps cover.

Single-piston calipers of various sizes were used from 1997-99. For the 2000 model year a twin-piston caliper was used.

    1. Clean the area around the master cylinder reservoir and filler cap(s).

    2. Remove the filler cap(s) and siphon off about 25 percent of the fluid. This is to prevent overflow as the piston is pushed into the caliper. Fitting new pads will cause a rise in the fluid level.

    3. Raise and support the vehicle.

    4. Remove the wheel.

    5. Pry the piston side pad away from the rotor with a tool which won't scratch the rotor surface.

    6. Remove the caliper mounting bolts.

    7. Remove the caliper and brake pads from the rotor. Use a plastic mallet to tap it free, if necessary.

    8. Pry out the outboard brake pad.

    9. Remove the inboard shoe by tilting the pad outward until the retainer spring is clear of the caliper piston.

    10. Remove the anti-rattle springs, if fitted (2000 models).

    NOTE

The anti-rattle springs are not interchangeable.

    11. Support the caliper with a wire or twine: Do NOT allow it to hang by the hose.

    NOTE

Do NOT apply the brake pedal with the caliper off the rotor. Use a soft wedge (such as a piece of wood) to hold the pads apart if the caliper is to be off the rotor for any length of time.

    To install:

    12. Clean the caliper and steering knuckle slide surfaces with a wire brush. Then lubricate the surfaces with a thin coat of high temperature grease.

    13. On 1997-99 Rams, lubricate the caliper mounting bolts, collars, bushings and bores with silicone grease.

    14. Lubricate and install the anti-rattle springs (2000 models).

    15. Install the inboard shoe. Be sure the retainer spring is firmly seated in the caliper piston.

    16. Insert the outboard shoe in the caliper.

    17. Degrease the rotor with a safe solvent.

    18. Push the piston(s) in far enough to allow the pads to clear the rotor. This can be done by hand or with a special tool: several types are available.

    19. Install the caliper and rotor assembly. Be sure the caliper is seated flush on the mounting arm surfaces.

    20. Start the mounting bolts by hand to prevent crossthreading. Tighten the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm) on 1997-99 models, or to 24 ft. lbs. (33 Nm) on 2000 models.

    21. Install the wheel.

    22. Apply the brake several times to seat the pads.

    23. Check the brake fluid level at the master cylinder reservoir and add if necessary. How do i change the front brake pads on 2000 dodge 2500 truck?

YOU NEED A BRAKE CALIPER TOOL. THIS TOOL IS USE TO TURN THE BRAKE CALIPER PISTONS BACK INTO THE BRAKE CALIPERS. BEFORE TURNING THE BRAKE PISTONS, YOU NEED TO LOOSEN THE BRAKE BLEED SCREW ON THE CALIPER. THIS WILL PREVENT THE BRAKE FLUID FROM PUSHING AGAINST THE ABS PUMP OR MASTERCYLINDER WHILE TURNING THE BRAKE PISTONS BACK IN. AFTER YOU TURN THE BRAKE CALIPER PISTONS BACK IN, CLOSE THE BLEEDER SCREW. LUBRICATE THE BRAKE PAD ENDS AND BRAKE CALIPER SLIDING PINS TO PREVENT THE BRAKE PADS FROM RUBBING AGAINST THE BRAKE ROTORS ALL THE TIME.PUMP THE BRAKE PEDAL A FEW TIMES UNTIL IT GET HARD AND THE PEDAL IS ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP. Hello,

it depends on which pads, front or rear, what make of vehicle and are you going to DIY or taking to a garage. The average cost of fitting front pads to a popular car, Fiesta, would be about 拢25 plus the cost of the pads. Some places have a price list, mostly tyre and exhaust stations, Quick-fit and the like. Pads can cost the earth if you buy from car manufacturers but will cost less if you go non genuine. Hope that helps.

    Regards Chris.

How do you change the front brake pads on a suzuki scooter?

Its a 1996 AP50, The bit I'm confused about is the brake-fluid, do you have to release it first, if so how?How do you change the front brake pads on a suzuki scooter?
Remove caliper/with a toothbrush and some brake cleaner solution clean the pistons before returning them into the caliper bores.

    Leaving the old pads installed...

Use a flat blade screwdriver between old pads and gently push/pry the pistons back to give clearance for the new pads to fit over the caliper. Leaving the old pads in and pushing against them assures you dont damage anything and gives a solid surface to return the pistons back to the resting position.

The brake fluid will be forced back into the master cylinder/ be sure it does not become overfull.(remove it's cover)

Now remove the lock clip and pin or pins that support the old pads and remove them.

Look to see the pistons are both returned completely into their cylinders in the caliper body.

If need be slip the old pads back into the caliper and pry some more gently returning pistonsfor proper clearance. Clean well all surfaces and buff or wire wheel the pins of all dirt and rust/shine them up!

If anything seems wrong ie siezed rusty pistons/ replace! If pistons are siezed take the calipers to a shop for rebuilding or ask more questions here!

Install pads with fibre facing rotor/metal side facing piston.

Install caliper and pump brake to bring pad into contact with rotor and spin wheel to see if all is free and not binding.

Check brake fluid and adjust as necessary replsce cap and ride on/ if you have not allowed air into the system you should not have to bleed it!

It's not rocket science and you should be able to do this yourself if you have some metric tools.

Flush and replace brake fluid every two years!

Suck it out the master cyl reservoir and bleed it out the caliper. How do you change the front brake pads on a suzuki scooter?
The braking system on a bike or car should NEVER be touched by person who doesnt know exactly what they are doing !! Please take your scoot to a motorcycle shop to have the pads fitted. Its allot cheaper to pay a mechanic to fit your pads than to do it yourself potentialy kill yourself due to brake failure.

It all depends on where do you get it changed from. If you want to do it on your own, I will suggest you to buy pads from a standard spare parts shop which should cost you about 拢40 and that's it. If you want to get it done from a local mechanic, he can charge you upto 拢20 on top of it. If you are getting it done from an Autocentre then they will charge you around 拢100(including everything).

I will suggest not to use places like Kwik Fit, Nationwide Autocentres or any other express repair shops. they just charge you loads for nothing.

So best is to get it done from a nice autocentre which charge you a little bit extra from a local mechanic and lot less than Kwik Fit type of centres and gives you 1000% peace of mind.

Shop around and see who gives you best service and guarantees the service.

Changing breaks is simple. Please read this in it entirety before trying.

First you need to assess if you have warped rotors. If while breaking the vehicle surges under the pressure of the standard breaking not hard breaking then you have a warped rotor. You have to either remove them and take them to a local shop and have them turned or replace them all together. If you have one warped rotor it is best to have them both turned as pinpointing which one is warped is next to impossible.

Buy a Break Piston Compressor from your local Automobile Shop. Provided a link on what it looks like. While you are there buy the pads. You will want to get the premium or ceramic pads as they will last longer.

Now be prepared to get dirty.

Let the vehicle set for one hour if you just came back from the shop to have the breaks cooled down properly.

Open the hood and loosen the cap for the break reservoir. Do not add more fluid at this time. While performing this break replacement break fluid may spill out so loosely wrapping a rag around the break reservoir will catch most of it. DO NOT REUSE THE FLUID YOU CATCH AND PUT BACK IN THE SYSTEM.

Jack up the vehicle and place a jack stand under the control arm. That is for safety in case the jack fails.

Remove the tire and set aside.

Locate the caliper with the break pads in place.

Open the box that has the new pads. Examine the pads to make sure that you purchased the correct pads by comparing them while they are still on the vehicle. Pads have a metal side and a rough material side to them. After verifying that everything looks the same remove the two bolts that are on the back of the caliper. They are not the large 15/16 bolts they are probably 10mm or 12mm bolts.

Once they are removed, remove the caliper by sliding it forward from the top to the front of the vehicle and lift up. You can set the caliper on top of the rotor while working. DO NOT REMOVE THE BREAK LINE AS DOING SO WILL REQUIRE YOU TO HAVE TO BLEED THE SYSTEM.

Remove the outer pad make note of how you take it out and how it was positioned in the caliper. You may need a screwdriver to help release the clips from the caliper. Do not bend them.

Now leaving the inner pad in place use the piston compression tool and push the piston further into its cylinder. Make sure that you place the tool in the center of the piston and apply Even pressure until it bottoms out. You will know that because you cannot turn it anymore. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.

Open the box that contains the new pads. Locate the Inner pad and remove the inner pad from the caliper and replace it with the new one. Now put the outer pad in place. Return the caliper to its correct position back on the the rotor assembly and insert and replace the bolts. They should be torqued to 10 to 15 ft pounds no more. All vehicles are different so you may want to ask for the torque specifications on your model from the local repair shop.

Replace the tire and perform that same steps on the other side.

After you are finished make sure to tighten the cap for the Break reservoir and close the hood. Start the vehicle and slowly pump the breaks till they feel normal. Test drive it a short distance going slow. No more than 15 mph and test the breaks again. Works great.

Now go clean up you terrible. How do I change the front brake pads on a 2003 dodge ram 2500 2wd truck w a 5.7l engine?
If you dont know how to change your own brakes and have to ask on here how to change them. I would take it to a shop you dont want to mess the brakes up or anything in general in your motor.

I just need to know how to push back the caliper. I know not spelled right sorry. Please just step by step help would be great90 lexus ls 400 how to change front brake pads?
You can usually do this by taking the lid off of the reservoir and then putting a C clamp across one of the old pads and back of the caliper. (while the pad is in place)

Crank down on the C clamp slowly (so that no fluid shoots out of the reservoir) until there is enough space to fit the new pads and have them fit over the rotor.

This method doesn't open the system, so air can't get in.

(No need to bleed the system afterwards)

:)90 lexus ls 400 how to change front brake pads?
Always open the bleeder, then compress with a clamp or large pliers. After installing your brakes, take the top off the master cylinder, fill it up, and crack the bleeders one at a time for a few seconds to let it gravity bleed. If you dont open the bleeders to compress the caliper, you take a chance of forcing old/dirty brake fluid back into the master cylinder possibly damaging it internally.90 lexus ls 400 how to change front brake pads?
Open the bleeder valve and push the pistons back. But you should remove the calipers, blow the pistons out with low (20psi) air pressure, clean out the calipers and carefully put them back together. Again you will need low air pressure. If you have never done this try and find a friend or someone that has to help you. Any dirt or crud in the calipers can cause the brakes to lock up.

Change Astra Brake Pads - How easy?

Hi there, I need to replace JUST the brake pads on the rear of my Astra G Coupe. How easy is it to do - do I need any special tools?

Thanks in advance for your replies ;-)Change Astra Brake Pads - How easy?
You will need a special tool to wind the pistons back to accept the new pads.

It is a easy job to do, but if you've never done it before and are unsure how to do it take it to a garage the brakes could save you life one day.Change Astra Brake Pads - How easy?
Oh dear please don't mess about with the brakes on your car if you do not know what you are doing. Take it to halfords etc etc. When you are in hospital because you smacked into a bus because your brakes did not work you will be pleased you saved yourself a few quid. NOTChange Astra Brake Pads - How easy?
very easy if u no wot u doinChange Astra Brake Pads - How easy?
it depends on the type of brake caliper pistons that are fitted onto the rear of your car, some are the wind in type which need special tools and some are just push ins. if you are asking this question i would take it to kwik fit or a mechanic to have them done, its not just as simple as changing the pads, theres the bleeding thats involved too, if you dont bleed them properly in the correct sequence you will end up with spongy defective brakes.Change Astra Brake Pads - How easy?
    I aggree with many answers on this one. I have been a technician for more than 40 years and I really have to say %26quot;If you have to ask on a forum like this then you do not have the ability to do this properly%26quot;

Have it done in the local garage they should charge you no more than an hour labour and their standard rate plus the VAT. They are more likely to do it properly and certainly better than you can

impossible to answer regretfully...as you and nobody knows what state they are in...why have the hassle...get the mechanic to do it...then its done right and hassle freeChange Astra Brake Pads - How easy?
Hi there i am presuming that your in the uk if so i would agree with the other answers in that if you have no or little experiance take the car to a garage as a human life (or lives) dont compare to the amount of money you will save, over the yrs i have seen some horrendous crashes due to poorly maintained brakes and other poor repairsChange Astra Brake Pads - How easy?
Very straight forward if you know what your doing....If you dont you could get in all sorts of trouble and put yours and others life at risk! Take it to a garage its not a big job and a small price to pay for the sake of everyones safety.

Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?

and just came off how does the rotar go back on without being loose or is it ok just to put back onChanging brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
This is normal, when you reinstall the pad's just push it back into place

install the pad's the wheel,AKA the rim is what holds the rotor's in place when you tighten the lug nut's. Good luck.Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
Put it back on just like you took it off. Tip when you go to put the new shoes on you will need a C clamp to help you push the piston in make sure that the piston goes as far as it can go. Then put back on rotor tighten the two bolts. then do the same to the other side. when don check your break fluid. top off if needed.Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
The rotor is held on by the wheel when it is put back on and the combination of the brake pads and caliper. your ok no problems that i see.

the rotor in some cars is held on by two little screws on others its held in place by the tire rim and bolts

no worrys just slap it on there but wait did you get them resurfaced you should since you replaced the pads..Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
I think on those cars the lug nuts hold everything together everything should be fineChanging brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
It's supposed to be loose.. The caliper and pads hold it tight along with your wheel being pressed against it.Changing brake pads on a 1991 laser i gopt the brakes off and the disc/rotar thing was loose?
your caliper holds the rotor on, on some cars, best thing to do is look in the maintenance manual hope that helps,

Pictures would be very helpful. I have changed the brakes on a Citroen Saxo but needed a book for it. Can't find a book for the leon. I think it is just 2 bolts holding the caliper on but i need to find out for sure if this is the right way to do it.How do i change the front brake pads on my Seat Leon 1.4S ?
there should be two bolts that hold the caliper on if you undo the bottom one you can lift the caliper out the way and remove the pads once you have done that you need to whined back the piston on the caliper make sure the cap under the bonnet is removed before you do this once that's done put some copper slip on the back off the pads and then place then into the caliper holder put it all back together and you are done and don't forget to pump the brake pedal after hope this helps

http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBrokerI need instructions on how to change my brake pads on my %26039;86 Plymouth reliant?
Go to Autozone or other store and buy a repair manual. They are a wealth of information for the price you pay. But if you want a short description on disc brakes here you go. If disc looks shiny or has grooves you need to have it machined. You need the manual for disc removal. If disc is in good shape, remove pads. Then slowly compress the pistons with a clamp or other tool. Install new pads and check fluid level. That's the short of it. Buy the manual, well worth it.

How to properly change front brake pads on a 2003 silverdao 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive reg. cab v-6?

Does the ABS need to be disconnected? Never changed brakes on a vehicle w/ ABS.How to properly change front brake pads on a 2003 silverdao 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive reg. cab v-6?
no u dont have to disconnect the abs just do the pads as u would anyother car .......1. take off tires 2. use a big screw driver or pry bar and colapse the caliper piston by inserting it in the opening on top of the caliper, be careful not to scratch the rotor with the screw driver or pry bar, ans do not open any lines before doing this or at any time during the job 3. take off caliper by loosening the 2 bolts on back of caliper 4. remove caliper from rotor and remove brake pads 5. clean the hardware on the caliper and lube it with either a light coat of grease or non drying silicone 5 if u use non drying silicone then apply it to the new pads( prevents the squeaking noises brakes make 6 u may have to finish colapsing the caliper piston if u do use a screw driver and place it on the edge of the piston and push it in the caliper 7. then place the caliper back on the rotor lining up the holes in back for the retaining bolts on the caliper 8. do other side when one side is done.... dont compress both caliper pistons at the saome time it will overflow the master cylinder ..... good luckHow to properly change front brake pads on a 2003 silverdao 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive reg. cab v-6?
Unbolt the caliper and replace the pads. Remove the caliper mounting bracket if the rotors are to be removed and machined. How to properly change front brake pads on a 2003 silverdao 1/2 ton 2 wheel drive reg. cab v-6?
p.s. Dont forget to take off the brake master cylinder cap to relieve the pressure when you compress the caliper piston with the screwdriver. Or, if you have a big c-clamp, wait till the caliper is off and compress it then. Go slowly so you dont spray brake fluid on your hood and fenderwells, cause it will eat the paint off, guaranteed!!

How come I have to change my BMW brake disc already?

Whats with this people wanting to change my brake disc of a 2 year car ?

I have a Toyota and I change the brake this like one time, and it have 14 years (2002)

I understood that the brake disc deteriorate if you dont change your brakes pads on time, when is needed

I have only change my brake pads on time and was on time, as soon as the light sensor went off, I change the pads

Now the sensor is on and I went where I bought the car to buy my pads but it seems they want me to change both front brake discs, so I went to another recognize BMW part shop and they told me I need to change the four of them!

I want second opinion on this cause I dont think its that neccesary or it deteriorate that fast

With your opinion I'll check again in a particular mechanics and see if Im a need of new brake disc

Thanks in advanceHow come I have to change my BMW brake disc already?
You really must not have driving your Toyota that much or did much braking in that vehicle, or your driving habits have changed with the BMW over the Toyota.

My wife's 2003 Corolla needs a brake job about every 18 months. She drives in very hilly areas and applies her brakes more frequently.

I drive a 2004 Pontiac Vibe (the same as a Toyota Corolla with a different upper shell). Have not had to replace the brakes yet and last inspection still had 50% of my brake pad left.

Brake pad replacement depends on your driving habits and braking frequency. It doesn't hurt to get a second opinion. (It rarely ever does), but not sure how you got 14 years on a single set of brake pads unless you didn't drive that much.

Ok, your talking about the disk rotors, I misunderstood your question. These days manufactures do make rotors out of cheaper metals to minimize brake noise. You can purchase rotors made from higher quality metals that last longer from an auto parts store. Just ask them for the higher quality rotors.

Most manufacturer's have a minimum thickness that is recommended for the rotors as well. These days they don't make rotors as thick to reduce weight and allow for better cooling of the brake area. This unfortunately amounts to having to change the rotors a bit more frequently. From personal experience this is typically every other brake job for the original OEM brake rotors. (ie you can get them turned(machined) once, but typically not twice)

Next time you have the brake rotors replaced, ask for the higher quality rotors. They are more expensive (typically by 50% more), but they will keep you from having to replace them as frequently. How come I have to change my BMW brake disc already?
Many new cars need complete brake overhaul after two years, when I first heard of this it surprised me as well. I think it has to do with the cars sitting on lot for long time and actually starting to rust and detoriate just sitting there. You would never think to pop off the tires and check out brakes before buying on a new car, but maybe you should. How come I have to change my BMW brake disc already?
BMWs are heavier, tires are wider, wheels larger and speeds greater which puts stress on the braking system.Brake repair produces the greatest profits and people do not resist because it is a safety issue.Air conditioning in Florida is a must so people bend over and accept the price for repairs. You could do the work yourself if you were the ultimate repairing machine,if mechanics make $50 an hour then every hour you spend under the hood is a pay raise.Get rid of those projector headlights before damage is done to your chassis and the loot fenced on eBay.How come I have to change my BMW brake disc already?

How to Change '00 Lincoln LS brake pads?

Is changing the brake pads in a '00 Lincoln LS the same as changing any break pads, or are special tools and directions needed?? I can't find anything in the manual about changing the breaks and don't want to spend the money to pay someone else to do it if it is something that I can do myself. How to Change %26039;00 Lincoln LS brake pads?
I've not personally done a pad change on a 2000 LS but I would not expect it to be any different from any other Ford. I will assume from your question you've done pad changes before on other cars so I won't do a step by step procedure for you, but a good set of 1/2%26quot; metric sockets, 1/2%26quot; ratchet, and a 1/2%26quot; breaker bar (unless you're super strong) is most all you'll need. It does help to have a pad expander tool to push the pistons back into their bores, allowing room for the new thicker pads. Don't let the caliper hang by its hose, suspend it with a coat hanger or zip tie while you work with it. And while you have it all apart turn the rotors. Hope this helps you a bit.How to Change %26039;00 Lincoln LS brake pads?

How to Change %26039;00 Lincoln LS brake pads?
Are we working on front brakes, or rear brakes? First step is to jack up and support the side of the vehicle we are working on. Next step is to remove the wheel nuts with an impact gun and a 19mm impact socket. You better go to your local Ford dealer parts department to buy a few extra wheel nuts because they strip VERY easily, due to the taper design of the wheel nuts. If it's the front brakes, using a 12 or 13mm wrench, loosen and remove the caliper bolts. Remove the brake caliper (these particular brake calipers are very light). Using the appropriately sized extension and a swivel 15mm impact socket and impact gun, remove the two caliper bracket bolts, taking care not to mistakenly remove the hub and bearing bolts, since they are so close to each other. Using one of the old brake pads rested on both caliper pistons and a pair of channel locks, compress the two pistons back fully. The brake rotors just %26quot;knock%26quot; off at this point. Install new brake rotor onto hub, and secure with two wheel nuts snugged up to temporarily hold rotor onto hub until pads and caliper are reinstalled. Lubricate brake pad contact surfaces with anti-seize, and reinstall brake pads onto bracket. Reinstall brake caliper. Reinstall wheel and repeat procedure for other side. BE SURE TO PUMP UP THE BRAKE PEDAL BEFORE YOU MOVE THE VEHICLE. Hope this helps. How to Change %26039;00 Lincoln LS brake pads?

I haven't noticed problems stopping but then again I don't want to wait until they get to be paper thin to replace them either. Hi, brakes change will depend on your braking habit. Hard braking means you will wear them out more. Gentle and gradual braking will conserve your brake pads. You can drive 100,000miles and hit your brakes once and they will be as good as new.

City driving with lots of stop and go will wear brakes more than open highway driving, so the type of driving will play a part in the wear of your brakes.

For disc brakes, you can see the brake linings on the brake pads and I will consider changing them in pairs on the wheels when the linings wore down to about 1/16th of an inch. You can still have effective braking with them still.

Your vehicle drive train will also wear brakes more. If you have a front-wheel drive car, the front brakes will tend to wear faster due to having stop heavier momentum, likewise the rear brakes for rear-wheel drive. Take a look at the brake pads for best gauge to replacing them.

Most if not all cars with disc brakes have a little metal plate which rubs against the disc when you are getting to the stage where they need to be replaced, the wear indicator will make a screeching sound when it's time to replace the pads, my last set of pads lasted me 100,000 km's.I have disc brakes in the front and back. How often (miles or time) should I change the brake pads??
Disc brake pads have a sensor built in on them. It all depends on how much you drive your car. If your discs are smooth, your pads will last for a very long time. A good breakpad should last up to 100,000 miles.I have disc brakes in the front and back. How often (miles or time) should I change the brake pads??
On all autos, with disk brakes, the brake pad has a flexible metal tab, that creates a %26quot;skreching/rubbing%26quot; noise when the thickness of the pad becomes unsafe. In most cars, the front wheels/brakes will wear faster than the rear pads. The amount that the car is used, whether in the city with a lot of stop and go traffic, or in the country, with long open driving condition, will determine the frequency of need to %26quot;re-do your brakes%26quot;. Of importance, if you do hear the sound of scrapping/rubbing noise, if allowed to go too long, will cause your brake rotors to wear abnormally. Making additional cost of brake repair. Usually when detected early, changing the pads frequently will prolong the life of your rotor, and even the calipers holding the pad will last longer. Your oil, and engine maintenance will be required a lot more often than the need to replace your brake pads. Most auto service centers, will provide a courtesy walk around inspection of your car when you take it in for your routine oil change service. A sign of wear of your brakes, is sometime seen as a black dust/powder showing through your wheels.

In general, this is a pretty simple task to accomplish yourself. That said, it's not something that you can zip through in 15 minutes. Especially if you've never done it before. As long as you have all the info on the correct procedure, know what parts and tools you'll need, and have the time to do it right there's no reason to be concerned about changing your own brakes. Is it a bad idea to change the brake pads on your car yourself?
It is perfectly safe and simple. For disc brakes anyways because I have not done drums. Most small cars are discs in front drums on back and you do the fronts 5X as often as the backs. Use a C-clamp and press on the old brake pad ( pushes the piston back )

you first MUST remove the 2 caliper bolts and pull the caliper off the rotor. You do not have to remove the brake line though... Just try to balance the caliper on top of the rotor while working with it to push the piston back.. No brake bleeding required this wayChanging brake pads pulling off caliper?
In an automotive garage they usually have a tool for pushing the caliper pistons back into the caliper. It looks like a backwards pliers that pushes out with two plates on each side. This essentially pushes both sides of the caliper back in easily. You could try to find one of these or you can use channel locks to push the calipers back in a little at a time. Vise Grips will also work great if you have these tools. If not you can always try to use anything like a screwdriver or something like that to simply push the calipers back in.Changing brake pads pulling off caliper?
I usually pry open the caliper a little with a big screw driver to release some of the pressure and then the caliper and pads come right off. Open the break fluid container in the engine compartment and get ready to soak up the overflow.

It is very hard to take them off if you do not release some of the pressure.Changing brake pads pulling off caliper?
I use a 6 inch c-clamp. Leave one of the old pads in the Caliber against the piston and Tighten slowly, and do not be alarmed with fluid that might over flow from the master cylinder.Changing brake pads pulling off caliper?
you use a c-clamp to push the piston back into its bore so the new pads will go over the rotor.you won,t break the seal. the seal is up inside the piston. what you see on the outside is the dust boot.

from the shop yesterday and the brake light came on the dashboard, he did something and went off. Today I was on my way to work when the light came on again, what should i do, or how can i fix this?I had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?
you reset it with a computer, take it back and make him fix it,free.

if your car has anti-lock brakes and he didn't open the bleeders on the calipers when he compressed them, that forced the fluid up to the ABS control and may have caused damage.

or just check the fluid level and tap on the side of the resevor, the float may be stuckI had my mechanic change the brake pads and resurface the disk? on my car, I picked up the car?

bring the car back and have him clear the computer of the break fault ... you need to learn some about mechanics ... how many wheels did he do ... you should do a pair not one ....you do 2 or all 4 ... doing just one wheel will make the brakes stop un evenly ... you are talking about disk brakes ... a lot of cars have front discs and rear drum brakes .. they work and are repaired very differently ... Find out more about your car and the repairs will be easier and cheaper ... A mechanic who senses you know about cars will not try to rip you off selling you stuff you do not need ....

How do i change the brake pads on my 2003 honda accord lx?

ive tried to do it myself but i cannot get the calipers to loosen is there some kind of special trick i dont know about? How do i change the brake pads on my 2003 honda accord lx?
OK so I started to simply make some suggestions and it turned out to be close to an actual answer so I'm putting it here as well for Gino.

Honda front brake pads are easy to replace compared to many other types. If you have less than 50,000 miles on the car you should not be worrying about the front pads. Since you are we'll presume you drive a lot like I used to and the concern is valid. Don't let dealers try to get you to worry about such things so they can make a killing on a repair.

    1) If you don't know where to start I would suggest going to your local auto parts supply (not the dealer!) such as Kragen, Shucks, Murray, Checker, or Advanced Auto Parts Stores. These are all owned by %26quot;Parts America%26quot; and the names are related to the area you live in. See their web site at www.partsamerica.com for the nearest location to you.

    2) Get a Chilton's auto repair manual for your vehicle. It will provide you with the details on how to change your brake pads. It will also tell you how to inspect them (after you jack the car up take the wheel off)to see if they are in need of replacement.

    3) If you decide to do this on your own, you will need some simple tools. First suggestion I tell my friends is before you start to do anything to remove the caliper is to turn the wheel a few times. When the car is stopped the front brakes tend to stay close to the wheel. If you don't know the air that is generated when the car is moving creates an air cushion that keeps the brake pads away from the rotor. By turning the wheel first you will loosen this enough to make it easier to do the job.

    4) Second thing before you remove the caliper is to examine the disks. You will be able to see about 3/4 of the disk at a time because the caliper blocks your view. Because you turned the wheel before removing it you should be able to turn the disk grabbing the lug bolts that the wheel attached to. Please DO NOT touch the rotor with your hands. These need to be clean at all times. What you are looking for is to see if the rotors are worn and need replacing. Starting at the part closest to the hub follow the profile of the rotor surface to the outer most part. The surface should be smooth, have no discoloration, and with a 2003 vehicle there should be almost NO ridge at the outer edge (1/4 inch). I have a 2002 CR-V and there is no ridge on my rotors. My wifes '97 Accord has 84,000 miles on it and just a bit of a ridge; This is acceptable wear. (bye the way I didn't have to replace her brake pads until the car hit 70,000 miles.) If you see any significant ripples on the surfaces then you have spent too much time with your foot on the brake. If you have anything other than smooth rotors you should consider having someone qualified (with experience that is) work on it. Find a friend because %26quot;Turning the Rotors%26quot; requires knowledge and a machine shop is not a fun job nor anything to be taken lightly.

    5) Gather the tools (Wrenches will be METRIC) and follow the instructions in the book to remove the rotors. Remember they are fairly heavy as they are made of cast iron for durability. They will remain attached to the car via the brake hose. DO NOT attempt to remove them, this would make a big mess and add to the cost. I do recommend you have a box like a milk carton crate and a couple of smaller items available to stack up as necessary to rest the caliper upon.

    6) A large %26quot;C-Clamp%26quot; is always useful to push the %26quot;Puck%26quot; pack into the caliper. This must be done so that the thicker pads can fit between the caliper and the rotor. The C-Clamp will have to have an opening of at least 6 inches to be useful. Be careful not to place the c-clamp at an angle or you can jam the puck. I like to use a piece of 1/4 inch plywood across the entire puck surface and that way pressure is placed evenly around the puck as you gently tighten the clamp thus pressing the puck back into the caliper.

    6) Make sure you DO NOT touch the face of the new pads with dirty hands or they will have a tendency to squeak. The dirt and/or oil from your hands should be removed prior to installing the pads into the caliper.

Chilton's books will provide you with a list of tools usually required to do the job and the specifications for your car. The pads should run between $40 and $75 depending upon where you live. The book will become your best friend if you intend to do maintenance of this type in the future so look at it as an investment in long term savings.

Ive done this million of times. Once you do it, its easier next time. I'm guessing it's disc,so, nope, the claiper can stay put, just loosen the one bolt ont he botton of the calliper, and the cover should lift up, from botton to top ini a outward motion, like lifting up a car hood.

Then use a screwdriver to loosen the pads on each side, and take em out.

Here is a generic front pad replacement example. Your car will be similar. And, yes, in general, the calipers have to be removed to replace the brake pads. The caliper cylinders must be pushed back into the calipers to allow space for the extra thickness of new pads.

I have a 2001 Impala how hard is it to change the brake pads and rotors out?

I am a mechanically inclined person with not much auto experience. It just costs so much to have a shop put on new rotors and most of the time they hose you on the parts.I have a 2001 Impala how hard is it to change the brake pads and rotors out?
Disc brake pads are easy. Once the caliper has been removed, the rotor should slip right off the studs, although there is probably a retaining clip you'll need to remove if they're never been off before. It would be worth your while to go to Autozone and pickup the Haynes manual for a 2001 Impala ($15-$16).I have a 2001 Impala how hard is it to change the brake pads and rotors out?
changing the rotors and brake pads is pretty easy, you may have to remove some long bolts going through the caliper, or use a hammer and punch to drive out a bracket holding the caliper together. most have bolts holding the caliper together. but one thing to remember is when you push the piston back into the caliper, be sure to crack open the bleeder screw so that you do not force brake fluid back up through the abs(if it has abs) or up back in to the master cylinder which could flip the seal on it causing it to leak. also a good habit would be to use a c-clamp to push back the piston, but use one of the old brake pads against the piston so that it doesn't damage it. as for the rotors, they should just slip off, unless there is a retaining clip that u would have to remove, but it easily comes off in most cases.oh and be extremely sure to tighten the bleeder screw back up or else you will get air in your lines causing u to have a spongy brake pedal and causing you to have to bleed your brakes.just don't over tighten them. if the bleeder screw begins to strip, do not continue to unscrew it as it may snap. if it snaps or strips you may need a new caliper unfortunately. hope this helpsI have a 2001 Impala how hard is it to change the brake pads and rotors out?
there are two bolts that hold the caliper on two the mounting bracket. I think they are 14mm. you'll probably have to retract the piston in the caliper to get the pads to clear the rust ridge on the rotor. Use a big C-clamp around the caliper and push on the back of the outboard pad. After you take off the caliper, you can use the c-clamp and the inboard pad to retract the piston all the way. There are two bolts that hold the caliper mounting bracket on to the knuckle. I forget the sizes of the bolts. Actually, I think that the caliper bolts may be 12mm and the mounting bracket bolts may be 14mm. You'll have to remove the bracket if you are replacing the rotors. But, unless you have a brake pulsation, excessive scoring or pitting, you shouldn't have to replace the rotors or have them resurfaced. In fact, gm doesn't recommend resurfacing the rotors for just replacing the pads. Only for the reasons I just mentioned. Overall, it's a pretty simple job. Quite self explanatory.

the brakes have 2 main bolts, take them off and they should be like 5 inches long they connect the 2 pieces that connect and preasure the pads in, then when pads are changed you need at least a big C-Clamp to pinch in the brake pistons, just check out the site it probably be better than my simple explanation

You have to release the emergency brake pre load.

There should be an access plug on the back of the caliper for this (you will need an Allen wrench most likely).

This allows the piston to be withdrawn into the cylinder.

You will also need to tighten it down to a point of a little drag to get the hand brake to work right.

Remember to have your brake fluid changed every 2-3 years. Other than that, the pads are pretty much the same. Uswe ONLY the genuine brake fluid for your particular car found at your dealership. NEVER mix different brands of brake fluid together. Disaster follows, on down the road! With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?
Depends on what kind of vehicle we're talking about. Early automotive applications of ABS would have a reserve pressure. That would be the ABS accumulator. Such accumulators are designed to hold a high PSi in the system. Red flag's up here. Follow all warnings and recommendations by the vehicle manufacturer. Especially when performing brake work.

Best wishes and stay safe. With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?
Explain to your dad that the ABS system is a sensor and ring attached to the hub - it has no bearing on the actual calipers and brake pads - which are generally the same parts on any specific vehicle whether the vehicle has ABS or not. With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?
abs systems have a sensor usually located somewhere on the axle or on the spindle /mounting area. usually has a single wire attached to it. as long as you do not damage this or bend it etc. the procedure for changing pads is the same. With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?
No difference. The calipers themselves don't have any ABS components in them.

Changing some wheel discs might affect the wheel speed sensors, but even these are quite simple. With ABS systems on most cars, how does it affect the changing of brake pads?
It doesn't look any different. You will see the sensor, but it is inboard from where the pads are.

Brakes are really important, my advice would be. If you have any concern about doing the work yourself don't take a change, take the car down to your local garage.

If you do it yourself, its really straight forward to go. Just take your time and make sure you re-fit all the parts that came off.

If the pads are badly worn, when you push the pistons back into the callipers. Make sure that the brake fluid in the reservoir does not over flow into the engine bay.

Buy the pads and have a friend do the work. The rotors will have to be turned or replaced. A garage would cost about $250, but that doesn't include replacing the rotors (in most cases). How much does it cost to change the brake pads in my car?
Go the dealership and buy your own genuine pads and rotors. Many modern cars are designed to replace the rotors when the pads wear down anyway. They engineer things like this to save weight. You can do this job yourself with a few hand tools. Use ALLDATA data base found in many libraries, or a Haynes manual for your specific car brand. Keep the old rotors, have them inspected for proper thickness, and have them turned for the next time you need brakes. They probably are too thin, anyway. If they are re-usable, coat them in grease and sotre in wax paper. Don't forget that you need to have your brake fluid changed every 2-3 years. READ your owner's manual to understand why. Brake fluid wears out, just like oil and trans fluid. WHen it goes bad, the acids in it eat away at brake seals. Once again, use only GENUINE NISSAN brake fluid.. Mixing different brake fluids together can cause severe component issues. Good luck!!How much does it cost to change the brake pads in my car?

If it's like most older Acura's, you need to rotate the piston clockwise for it to go in. There will be a couple indentations on the face of the piston. Put the tips of a decent sized needle nosed pliers in each side, as opposed to grabbing the outside which might scratch it. They do make a special tool that I have, but I don't usually even bother using it.

When you get it back in all the way, make sure that the knob on the back of the brake pad fits into one of the indentations in the piston, or it won't work right. Rotate the piston back out a little until it lines up, if you need to.How to change rear brake pads on 2001 integra ls?
I'm not too sure of the type of caliper used on the Acura's. However, as far as I know, you can either push a caliper piston in with a C clamp, or it has to be turned with a special type of tool. For example, Ford application calipers. One can easily distinguish them by the notches on the pistons. If neither works, caliper might be locked. How to change rear brake pads on 2001 integra ls?

How do I change the brake pads on my 79 Datsun 210?

I can't figure out how to pull apart the caliper so I can get the pads off of those pins... I've been sitting there for 2 hours. I am a fairly experienced mechanic so I'm a little put off by having to ask for help, it's down right embarrassing. I've never not been able to figure something out on my own, so please be kind to my pride hahaha...

And thanks in advance. How do I change the brake pads on my 79 Datsun 210?
Those cars are actually very simple. You do not need to remove the caliper. You pull the cotter pin at the end of each pin, then pull the 2 pins straight out. Then you can pull the pads out. Thats all there is to it. You will need to push the piston back in before you will be able to put the new pads in.

    How To

    Change Your Brake Pads

Nothing is more important than your car%26039;s ability to stop itself.

Even race car drivers will tell you that a car%26039;s braking capacity takes precedence over its acceleration. Putting a car through a wall is not nearly as much fun as touching the brakes slightly, banking into a turn, and scooting out the other side. Nor as safe.

But braking systems often fail us -- usually from our own neglect. Even Formula One cars won%26039;t stop as effectively with worn brake pads. It%26039;s the equipment, folks, not the driver.

In the case of braking, it%26039;s essential that we maintain optimum friction pad depth to insure maximum performance of the braking system. In layman%26039;s terms: change your brake pads!

In previous articles at Edmunds.com we%26039;ve discussed the ins and outs of braking systems. The link below provides an excellent primer on the differences between drum and disc brakes. You might want to read it before going any further.

    Brakes: Drum vs. Disc

Okay, here%26039;s the deal. We%26039;re not going to go into some long, drawn-out discussion about the advantages and disadvantages of various braking systems, drag coefficients, friction rates, kinetic versus thermal energy, etc., etc. What we%26039;re going to do here is roll up our sleeves and do a brake reline. Leave that other stuff to the armchair mechanics, the sideline slackers.

As always with our How To columns, we suggest that you own a basic tool kit and have the time to commit to the task. This will take a few hours. In exchange, we hope to teach you a little something about braking systems and what makes them tick.

As we said at the outset, nothing is more important than your car%26039;s ability to stop itself. Learning about the braking system -- how it works, ways to maintain it, when to fix it, what to look for while you%26039;re in there -- will not only make you a smarter driver, but a safer one too.

    *

Since we have a limited amount of space here, we%26039;re going to focus exclusively on changing the front brake pads. Ninety percent of the brake pad changes you make during the life of your vehicle will be to the front pads.

You can check for brake pad wear by viewing the pads from outside the front tire. On most cars, you can look through the openings on the outside of the wheel/rim assembly to see the pads. (Of the six cars we looked at for this story, all but one had the pads clearly visible. On rare occasions, you may have to remove the wheel to see the pads.) The outside pad should be staring you in the face. Look at it from above. The pad will be pressed against the shiny metal rotor. See it?

Now, there are two way to determine whether the pads need replacing.

First, visually. If the pad depth is less than 录 inch, plan on replacing it soon. If it%26039;s less than 1/8 inch, you%26039;re getting close to damaging the rotor, so do it ASAP. This varies slightly from car to car, but is a good general guideline.

Second, by ear. They build these little noisemaking shims into the brake assembly to tell you when the pads need changing. Are you hearing a screeching sound when you apply the brakes, like a mouse trying to escape? You%26039;re overdue for a reline. (If the sound is more a scrape-y metal rasp, you%26039;ve already damaged your rotors and need to fix the brakes immediately.)

Okay, you%26039;ve determined that the front pads are due for replacement. Remember the rule here: better too soon than too late, which can result not only in more expensive repairs, but unsafe driving conditions as well. So let%26039;s go...

STEP ONE: Comfort first. Park the car in a cool, shady spot.

STEP TWO: Now safety. Block the rear wheels so the car won%26039;t roll once you jack it up. Put the car in park and set the parking brake firmly.

STEP THREE: Lay out your tools. Grab a tire iron and go to the front wheels. The tire iron is that long metal rod with a socket on the end of it that usually comes with the vehicle. You can also buy a really cool one (called a spinner) that looks like a metal cross -- in fact, it is a metal cross -- with different-sized sockets on each end.

What we want to do here, before jacking the car up off the ground, is loosen the lug nuts on the wheels just enough to break them free. So go do that. Work them off just enough until they loosen their resistance and become easy to turn with the tire iron. Now slip the jack under the car.

There are several places to safely jack up the car. If you have a floorjack, you can roll it all the way under to the center of the engine and jack it up using the K-member that holds the engine. Be careful not to use the oil pan, as you might damage it. If you have a smaller, single floor jack, you%26039;ll have to do one side at a time. Look for flat spots on the frame, immediately to the rear of the front wheels, or on the end of each axle.

CAUTION: Always use jack stands. Never attempt to work on an elevated vehicle held in place only by a hydraulic jack.

Okay, raise the front axle off the ground. Put your jack stands under each end of the axle, and lower the car onto the stands. A jack stand (see illustration) is a metal tripod with variable height adjustments. You should own two.

STEP FOUR: Remove the lug nuts and the wheel (the tire will be attached). Best to work on one wheel at a time, leaving the other side intact as a point of reference. As a safety precaution, roll the wheel/tire assembly under the front-center of the car, between the jack stands, and plop it down beneath the engine%26039;s K-member. In the event of a faulty jack stand, this will break the vehicle%26039;s fall and could possibly save your life.

STEP FIVE: Okay, take a breather. Now let%26039;s look at what we have before us.

A disc brake assembly is composed of the following elements: a caliper, two brake pads, a rotor, and some bolts and clips to hold it alltogether. It%26039;s a very simple design. Here%26039;s how it works.

The caliper comes in two flavors -- floating or fixed. Each works on a similar principle. The caliper%26039;s job is to squeeze the brake pads toward a centrally located metal plate -- the rotor -- producing friction, which in turn slows the car. Think of a hand slowly clamping down on a spinning record (or a CD, for you youngin%26039;s who%26039;ve never heard the term %26quot;record%26quot; before).

The brake pads hover on either side of the metal plate. They attach to the inside of the caliper, depending on your car%26039;s design, with clips or bolts. They are composed of heat-resistant material that rubs against the rotor. When the brakes are applied, the pads move toward one another, gripping the rotor between them and slowing the wheels.

The rotor is that shiny metal disc staring you in the face right now. You can almost see your reflection, right? Get your eyes level with it. If you can%26039;t see your face, or at least its general outline, it may mean that the disc needs servicing or replacement. Below, we%26039;ll show you how to check this disc for scoring or marring, and what to do about that.

STEP SIX: Back to work. Remove the bolts holding the caliper in place. Gently slide it out and away from the rotor. Inspect the inside of the caliper. See the pads? They will be held in place by a bolt or a series of clips, sometimes both. Remove the bolts or clips holding the pads in place (remember, you left the other side intact to use as a reference) and work them free. Examine the pads. Is there any %26quot;meat%26quot; left on them, or are they worn down to the screws? If they%26039;re completely worn, you should%26039;ve been hearing a metallic scrape for a while every time you applied the brakes.

Lay the pads aside and inspect the rotor. Can you see yourself in it? If the pads were worn into the metal, your rotor will be scored; you%26039;ll have trouble seeing yourself. Run your fingernails along the surface of the rotor -- careful, though; if it%26039;s been less than 20 minutes since you last drove the vehicle, they might still be hot -- first the side facing you, then the side facing away. Is it scored? Deeply? This next point is very important. If the rotor has any grooves at all in it, remove it at once. Now you have a decision to make.

If you have a scored rotor, you must decide whether to have it %26quot;turned%26quot; or to replace it. If you%26039;re short on money, take it to a local mechanic and ask him to %26quot;turn%26quot; it for you. What they do is put it on a special metal-cutting lathe and shave off several thousandths of an inch of metal until the disc is shiny again. Remember, though, one of the real advantages of disc brakes over drum is their heat-handling capability. By removing metal, you reduce the system%26039;s thermal transfer capacity. We recommend turning the discs only when you are short on bucks. The better way is to take the disc to the auto parts store, match it up with a replacement, and buy a new one. Last time we did this, it only cost us twenty bucks for a new rotor, a cheap investment in safety. You have to go there anyway to buy the new brake pads, as well as a few other things, so why not make it one trip. In fact, here%26039;s your shopping list:

new rotor, or rotors, if needed

new brake pads (bring the old ones, to match them)

brake pad grease (comes in little packets; they%26039;re cheap, so buy two)

STEP SEVEN: Go home and have a lemonade.

STEP EIGHT: Before you go any further, you must move the piston back to its %26quot;full open%26quot; position. The piston? you ask. Ah, we didn%26039;t tell you about that one, did we? Remember the hand-and-record analogy. As the fingers push down (equivalent to the brake pads wearing) the distance between the brake pads shortens. Now that we have brand new pads, we must return the system -- the hand -- to its original %26quot;open%26quot; position, to accommodate the new pads. There are several ways to do this.

First, find the piston. It is located along the back (closest to the engine) portion of the caliper. It%26039;s usually about three to four inches across, and resembles a small metal promontory with a flat top. See it? Depending on its condition and age, there are several things you can do to move it back (toward the center of the car). If it%26039;s new, try pushing it in with the heel of your hand. Doesn%26039;t work? Okay, then try a channel lock or a vise grip. Still won%26039;t budge? Then here%26039;s a suggestion. A neighbor of ours turned us on to this once, and it works great. Get a large C-clamp, place a thin piece of wood or cardboard over the face of the piston to protect the surface from marring, and work it back that way. As you turn the handle on the clamp, it will increase pressure on the piston, until it becomes flush with the surrounding metal. Then loosen and remove the C-clamp.

STEP NINE:Install the new rotor, if necessary. Remove the old brake pads from the caliper (usually held in place by several clips), but, before putting on the new ones, you must do something. Remember the little packets of grease you bought? These are used to lubricate the brake pads. Careful now -- not on the front of the pad, which comes in contact with the rotor, but on the back. The pads attach to the caliper via a plate-and-clip arrangement. The lubricant goes between the plate and the back of the brake pad. Got it?

Don%26039;t overlook this. If you don%26039;t do it, you%26039;ll get a horrible screeching sound every time you apply the brakes, like a dinosaur in heat (and you know how horny those velociraptors used to get). After you apply the grease, attach the pad to the plate and slide the whole thing into place.

STEP TEN:. Basically, at this point, just reassemble the system in reverse order of the way you took it apart. Now do the other side. Take the car for a test spin. Sometimes, with new brakes, you can get some weird scraping and scratching sounds; these will usually go away in a few days. Clean up, and you%26039;re done.

Don%26039;t underestimate the importance of a brake reline. As we said at the outset, absolutely nothing is more important than your car%26039;s ability to stop itself. Knowing more about your car%26039;s braking system -- getting in there and actually seeing what%26039;s going on -- empowers and informs you in a way that going to the corner mechanic doesn%26039;t.How do I change front brake pads on a 03%26039; 4Runner?

I would certainly hate to try to do a brake job from the Edmunds method as shown on this forum.

You are a complete novice, it sounds like, and need pictures and diagrams to assist you. It is not a difficult job but does require a little knowledge to get it right.

Never, repeat, never go to a dealer except for warranty work. Watch your step even then, they will sell you unnecessary work.

As for abs, carefully take off wheel and you should be able to see the abs pick and sensor. Just don%26039;t damage it.

If you get a Chiltons repair manual it should tell you all about it.

Don%26039;t buy an Edmunds manual, they are terrible.
