How much does a front brake job for an '06 Dodge Charger cost?

I think all it needs is for the brake pads to be changed. There is a little squeaking but very minor so I think the discs are ok. These brakes are high performance brakes that came with the car off the lot.How much does a front brake job for an %26039;06 Dodge Charger cost?
Whatever you do...DO NOT got to a chain brake shop such as Brake Team or Just Brakes, they are thieves and will sell you hundreds in stuff you do not need... you will NEVER get out of their shop with the 99.88 all four wheel brake job.... This I Guarantee... Brake Team out west quoted my brother 1600.00 in brake work, he declined and asked for it in writing, they refused...he took it to a friends shop and they discovered the brakes were brand new, but a caliper pin had broken... Total cost of repair = 7.00 , oh he had just bought the van and heard this noise so he took it in to see what it was, not knowing the condition of his brakes at all...

This is a true story and typical of these brake shops... Good LuckHow much does a front brake job for an %26039;06 Dodge Charger cost?

keep the oil changes up. get a tune up as scheduled and find a good shop you can depend on to maintain the car. don't let friends or family fix it unless you know they can because when you do you will pay extra in the long run.

I am changing the brakes on a 97 ford aerostar van. Do I remove the pins to remove the calipers and how.?

I am trying to get the calipers off my 97 ford aerostar van to change the brake pads. They do not have allen wrench bolts to remove them so how do i get them off. squeeze together and push. I would recommend you get a repair manual or at least Look at the auto zone web site under repairs to get information on how to do safely.

How many brake pads come in a box?

I'm looking to change out my brakes, and all of the auto parts stores around me have really cheap chinese-made pads, so I'm ordering some Bendix pads online. I know that there are 2 pads per rotor, but I wasn't sure if the box came with 2 or 4 pads.

Here is the link to the pads:

I have a p-reg Vauxhall Vectra and i am thinking about changing the brake disks and pads myself to save money?

Can i get some advice on a cheap place to get parts web or shop?

Plus how easy is it to do yourself iam of average ability with manual work so any pitfalls tp avoid? how do you bleed the brakes because i was told i have to do this when changing the disks.I have a p-reg Vauxhall Vectra and i am thinking about changing the brake disks and pads myself to save money?
if youve never done it before, get the parts from a store , they order the bits in for you and any decent store will check youve got the right part for your car. no need to go to a main dealer most little independant stores order the right bits in for you.

Its fairly easy to do, although slightly different procedure is needed on each car, having never worked a vectra I dont want to say its simple for you to do when there could be a fixing or special tool needed that i dont know about ( making the job tricky )

If you get yourself a decent haynes manual or equivilent and take your time, there shouldnt be any problems.

you dont need to bleed the brake fluid as the fluid presurises the caliper to push the pads to the disk. and your not disconnecting the caliper from the car, your just disconnecting it from the disk so the fluid pipes can stay intact.

Remember these are your brakes,, they're kind of important.

If you do change the disks remember to support the caliper with something, dont just leave it dangling by the pipes, it may seem fine hanging there, but thats how you end up with pipes splitting and no brakes at a very inopertune moment.

  • Question about brake/brake pad?

Hi, I have a 2006 honda civic LX. About two month ago, I found that whenever I step/push the brake, there would be some noises coming out from the car. I was thinking it might be time for me to change the brake pads as my car has now 85000 miles on it. (And I know that when the brake pads are worn seriously, there will be some noise coming out) However, after neglecting the noise for a few weeks, I now only hear the noise once a long while...so I am not sure wt's going on and what I should do. If the brake pads are really worn out, shouldn't that noise coutinue until I replace the brake pads?

Btw, if in case I do need to change the brake pads, do I also need to change the disc or re-surface the disc? how about rotor?...I am not good at car and I totally have no idea whatelse would need to repair/replace together with the brake pads.

Any opinion would be appreciated. thanksQuestion about brake/brake pad?
The occasional squeaking your hearing is usually caused from what's called %26quot;Glaze%26quot; on your rotors. It squeaks because of the material your pads are made of becomes embedded in the rotors over time. Usually the squeak will be heard when the pads haven't heated up yet and/or under light brake application. The cure would be to either live with it until you actually do need the pads changed, or change them now. Honda rotors can be machined but the labor to do so costs almost as much as the price of a new rotor these days. You don't have to go to a dealer to have the brake work done, although if you do Honda dealerships do use the best parts for your car. You can take your car to a privately owned shop that uses quality pads and rotors and get the same job done and at a lot cheaper price. Ask family or friends who services their cars for them and you should be able to find an experienced, hopefully honest shop. Good luck and hope this helps.Question about brake/brake pad?

Your life is riding on these brakes. From your question, it's obvious that you need to take the car to a qualified repair shop. Brakes are not a job for a %26quot;first-timer%26quot;.Question about brake/brake pad?
If you are %26quot;not good at car%26quot;, you need to get it to a reputable brake shop for an inspection. Don't put your life and that of those who ride with you at risk by attempting a job you are not qualified to do.Question about brake/brake pad?
Pull the wheels from the car and find out if the pads are worn, this car will have a squeal tab on each wheel, so you should know if they are worn. Also, before you take the wheel off, see if you can wiggle it, it should have very little to no wiggle.

If you need new pads ALWAYS resurface the rotor or you will be defeating the purpose and it will squeal like a madman. On this civic, try to use only ceramic or semi-metallic pads, NEVER organic (they tend to do very poorly and don't last long). Hope this helps you.

Pads themselves are fairly inexpensive items, and can be replaced by almost any home mechanic armed with only the simplest tools. Resurfacing the rotors, (like regrinding brake drums), checking the brake pistons, cylinders, lines, seals, and such, are another thing entirely. The total cost of a Brake job is going to vary greatly depending on (1.) where and who does it, and (2) what all needs attention to perform it , besides just replacing the pads. Pads can be bought for as little as eight dollars a pair, for most passenger cars, from some sources.I have a 2004 Infinity G35. My front brake pads need to be changed. What causes a grabbing noise like after changing the front brake pads on a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan?

It was making like a grabbing noise ( don't know how to explain it) every time you stepped on the brakes. Replaced the front brake shoes (which was worn down and needed to be replaced) Took it for a test drive and now that noise is alot louder then what it was before. It is coming from the passenger front side. I noticed on that right side rotor passengers side it had some grooves in the rotor. Which means that the brakes been down to far. But anyway the new shoes should wear in where it shouldn't make any noise but still does. Got over 50 miles on the new brake shoes. Would the wheel bearing be going out on that side? That is my only thought now. What causes a grabbing noise like after changing the front brake pads on a 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan?
There has been a rash of bad pads on the market recently. Some pads emit a gas when heated up just a little. Essentially Fart ing out between the pads and rotors making a horrible groan at very low speeds.

Brake pad and rotor change advice?

    Mazda astina 1991.

Mechanic says my brake pads need replacing, they are 19mm, the minimum thickness is 20mm. Should i be worried, how quick do they wear down?

My quote states x2 brake pads, one $76, the other $93. Why isn't he using the same type of pads? Also, is he assuming i want the best quality ones, should i ask for cheaper?

Plus x4 rotors, $57 each. But he told me only the fronts needs replacing. Are there 2 rotors per wheel?

    labour $130

I have not noticed any vibrating or warping. Only a put-put-put kind of shaking sometimes, when i change gears, just feels like it's a bit cold, and i'm not using the brakes at that time.

Might get another mechanic to just replace pads and check how damaged the rotors are.Brake pad and rotor change advice?
From your listed prices you've been quoted cheap off-shore brake rotors. Go to: autopartswarehouse.com and invest in EBC dimpled and slotted brake rotors which are produced in Great Britain. While your at their site pick out ceramic based brake pads. Do the job yourself and save $200.00!Brake pad and rotor change advice?
You really need to get another quote. Brake pad and rotor change advice?
his quote is for a four wheel brake job... the pads come in sets for front and rear.... not individual wheels... even though he said the rears may be thick enough now most shops will machine them to make sure they are not warped - if there is a warp they try to machine it out and then they may be to thin... so just to cover their butt they include new ones in the estimate... there are a few shops that just replace them though so always make sure to check the bill before you pay

I do mine myself and can't machine the rotors so they just get replaced... depending on how you drive they should last 20,000 to 40,000 miles... if they can be machined at that point then you may get more out of them... hope this helps and good luck with itBrake pad and rotor change advice?

  • 2005 Toyota Corolla needs new brake pads.?

I bought the toyota brake pads for my car but did not have the dealership put them on because they wanted to charge $275.00 to put them on.

Is it really a lot harder to change these than the ones on the older model cars before the anti-lock breaking system and such. I went to the library and copied the pages from the mannual on how to do it. It does look like there are a lot of little parts to remove to get to the pads. I've never worked on cars at all before. I have a few friends that have worked on the older cars and changed brakes but they say I shouldn't try it on a 2005. What do you think? If I took my car to some random shop to have them put on how much do you think I should be charged for a shop to install them for me?2005 Toyota Corolla needs new brake pads.?

Why don't you tell us what exactly the $275 price included.. did it also include new disc rotors?

No mechanic is stupid enough to quote $275.00 to fit already supplied brake pads... it's a 30 minute job!

If you know somebody who can change pads in a 1985 Corolla, then they can also change pads in a 2005 Corolla, it's the same job.

Having ABS, etc means nothing, doesn't change the simplicity of the job.

I think you're being had. Audi's were designed to have repeated safe stops at Autobahn speeds. In this country, where excessive speed is unlawful, European brake systems usually last twice as long. Front brakes usually 50-60,000 miles; rear brakes, 90-100,000 miles. Never use anything but genuine Audi parts in your brake system(don't go to Firestone and use aftermarket anything parts) The only exception are the brake pads made in Australia that leave no brake dust. Have your dealership prove to you that you have premature wear in your brake system, it should still be under warranty. Have your brake system examined at a brake shop for a second opinion, but don't let them bastardize your fine car with non OEM parts, you'll be sorry in the long run. well, brakes are a huge safety thing so if you dont have someone with you that knows what they are doing, i recomend you hire a pro. but if you insist on doing it yourself, there are some special tools you may need. I.E.= torx sockets, if your changing a hose or a line, you may need a line wrench so you dont strip the bolt, also a calliper spreading tool is handy. its also a good idea to clean everything (rotors and callipers) with brake parts cleaner. especially if you are installing new rotors. one more thing, the stop squeal goo that comes with the new brake pads, it works, but makes sure you put it on the BACK SIDE of the pads! How do i change a near side brake hose on a ford escort?
If you don't feel confident with the thought of the jobs don't attempt them. Can you drive a 96 dodge neon if it only has 3 lugnuts (2 are missing) on one tire?

okay, was getting my brake pads changed %26amp; the lugnuts were so rusted that it busted the studs off of it, and 3 broke. the guy was able to but a nut on one that didnt break all the way down, so i have 3 lugnuts on there, would it be okay to drive it for about a week until i can get it fixed? and what does it involve to get that fixed? how much would it be pricewise? Can you drive a 96 dodge neon if it only has 3 lugnuts (2 are missing) on one tire?
I wouldn't drive the car until this is fixed. If several studs already broke. Good chance the rest would too with extra stress on them.

There are several ways to repair this.

The fastest and easiest way will have a shop press in a new wheel bearing and hub.

If you can't afford that, a shop can press the hub out. Press in new studs and using a new bearing to press back into the spindle.

If you are really hurting for money. Then visit your local junkyard and buy a used spindle. Then have a shop install the replacement spindle.

I'd expect a shop to charge a few hundred bucks. Next time, have use anti seize on the lugnuts so you don't snap the studs. Can you drive a 96 dodge neon if it only has 3 lugnuts (2 are missing) on one tire?
Believe me, if the manufacturer thought three lug nuts were all your vehicle needed to be marginally safe, it would have come with only three lugs on each wheel.

If three lugs broke, it doesn't speak well for the integrity of the remaining two. I wouldn't recommend driving it - loosing a wheel is a very serious safety concern to say the least. Can you drive a 96 dodge neon if it only has 3 lugnuts (2 are missing) on one tire?
I wouldn't. One missing is usually okay ( for a short distance in an emergency type of situation ) but 2 is definitely pushing it ( especially if the 2 broken ones are next to each other ).Can you drive a 96 dodge neon if it only has 3 lugnuts (2 are missing) on one tire?

  • How to depress brake caliper?

96 Toyota Camry, changing the front brake pads, she is missing the small screw used to breed the brake to release the pressure from the caliper. Is there another way to depress the caliper w/out loosening that screw? How to depress brake caliper?
There is no pressure to be released. The piston must be pushed into the caliper with a tool. A pair of large channel lock pliers will do it if you've got enough grip because it takes a good bit of pressure to move the caliper. Auto parts stores sell the tool to do it with. Also a c-clamp will do it. Just be sure to press on the old brake pad and not the piston.

    rkbHow to depress brake caliper?
if missing small screw[ bleeder] all fluid will leak out..u cant tell me theres no way to bleed system.... but what you need to do is use a c clamp or actual tool made for that...sounds like u need shop manual or friend who knows cars [mechanic]How to depress brake caliper?
yeah get a C-clamp and press it in or you can leave it bolted on the car and put a screwdriver between the rotor and brake-pad and press it in . but a C-clamp will take it in all the way. if you do that you wont have to bleed the system . if you take the screw out you will have to bleed the systemHow to depress brake caliper?
Actually the caliper does not compress, it's the movable piston inside the caliper that will compress by sliding a large C clamp behind the caliper and screwing down the center of the outboard disc brake pad. There's no need to open the bleeder screws to do this. The fluid merely flows back up into your master-cylinder reservoir.

I'm somewhat mystified how you keep brake fluid in your brake caliper if the actual bleeder screw is missing. Believe me, it can't happen unless the caliper has an obstruction where the bleeder screw is threaded into the piston housing. If it is you'd be better off installing a re-built caliper so that you can bleed and flush your entire brake system with fresh brake fluid.

As brake fluid ages it becomes contaminated with water. The boiling point of the fluid drops dramatically and increased brake petal pressure is a direct result. This can lead to rust in the brake lines, wheel cylinders and caliper pistons. How to depress brake caliper?
Use a C clamp or a tyre lever the fluid will return to the master cylinderHow to depress brake caliper?
Just use a c-clamp and compress it it.How to depress brake caliper?
REMOVE THE BRAKE RESERVOIR CAP AND CHECK THE FLUID BEFORE YOU COMPRESS THE PISTON AND IF IT IS FULL JUST REMOVE SOME.

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A PISTON DEPRESSOR THEN YOU CAN USE A C-CLAMP AND AT THE SAME TIME USE ONE OF THE OLD PADS ACROSS THE PISTON AND TIGHTEN DOWN THE C-CLAMP ACROSS THE OLD PAD EVENLY AND DO ONE SIDE AT A TIME.

AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED ONE SIDE JUST PUMP THE BRAKES SLOWLY AND RECHECK THE FLUID, SAME FOR OTHER SIDE.

How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?

people tell me that i would know if my car feels like its holding back, but what if i dont know if my car is holding back or not?

because i bought my car used and i dont know how the feeling is supposed to be, but ever since then, i have had my brakes changed beforeHow do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
The brake pads usually touch the rotor a very small amount even when youre not pressing the brake pedal. Most rotors have a tiny bit of warpage to them from use. The best way to tell if the pad is dragging is if you smell the brakes. They will smoke when you park the car, and smell very strong. If youre wondering if one of the pistons in the caliper is sticking while pushed out, it will usually pull towards the side that is sticking. Also, you can tell if the pad wear is uneven between the two sides. There really is no reason why both calipers would be so far extended that you would feel a noticable drag. If that were to be the case though, expect to replace both calipers.

    EDIT -

Throwing water on a hot rotor can warp them. Youll be spending even more money to fix a problem that you didnt start with. Rotors can warp when they are hot and cool down suddenly and unevenly, such as being hit by water standing in the road. If you drive for an hour or around the block, when you brake the car to a stop and get out, the rotors will be hot. Period. The brake pads are stopping a 2000lb or more vehicle by rubbing two pieces of metal together. Theyre going to be hot. Dont throw water on them. How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?

The BEST way is to drive the car for 20 to 30 minutes and CAREFULLY throw some water on the wheels. IF the brakes are dragging, the water will steam. Use a small cup and or take a mouthful of water and squirt it on the wheel near the brake. ALSO you can feel the tire near the rim. IF its HOT or warm, take the car to a brake shop. They will check it free. I had a car with the brakes dragging and I had to get New brakes after 10 k miles. You can also take the car in to a BRAKE shop that has FREE inspection, and get their opinion. How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
If you are concerned about it %26amp; can't really tell just pull the tires %26amp; look. There should be a small gap between pad %26amp; rotor unless brake applied. Or take your car out for a drive around the block a couple times. Then check rim. A dragging brake will be extremely hot. If pads wore out you would here a squeel from the low brake spring indicator.

All else fails watch for smoke!!!!!How do i know if my brake pads are dragging against the brake disks?
the pads shouldnt be dragging,if the calipers are releasing them from the rotors.

What would be best OEM brake pads for MAZDA?

Im looking on ebay to buy some brake pads for my mazda 626 97 fwd FRONT manual. I was wondering what i should buy raybestos OEM??? CERAMIC METTALIC SEMI ORGANIC??? Everyone says oem is the best... i want something just as good and some breaks that dont squeek. i change my pads every year on my other car, so it doesnt matter how long they last as long as they are good and dont squeek. What would be best OEM brake pads for MAZDA?
you change pad every year? there's something wrong with your brake rotor.

i would say go with ceramic it does not heat up so much and cool down fast and its quieter since its ceramic and less wear on rotors and padsWhat would be best OEM brake pads for MAZDA?

ceramics last the longest usually and they make less noise because they are harder and obviously are not a full metal compound touching the metal rotor. I would say that if you aren't going to buy OEM brakes to get some decent aftermarket ones like Wagner or Bendix

I just changed the front brake pads for my '02 VR6 Jetta. After putting everything back togetther, I found ou

...out that now I have to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor for the car to stop. It also comes with a %26quot;hissing%26quot; sound when I depress the pedal. Does it mean I have to take the front tires out again and repurge the brakes? How do I do it without having to bleed out all the brake fluid? Thank you so much.I just changed the front brake pads for my %26039;02 VR6 Jetta. After putting everything back togetther, I found ou
as with the other answer I do agree you probably are low on brake fluid and you may have not bleed the brakes properly if you do not have a vacuum bleeder for your brakes you have to make sure you push the brake pedal very quickly and repeatedly then push and hold the pedal hard as some one opens the bleeder nut and the pedal hits the floor do not let the pedal come up off the floor until the bleeder is tightened or you may suck air into the line if you did have a loose brake line you would loose all your fluid pretty quick but yes do check them all and make sure they are not leaking

also the power booster may be leaking but I doubt it very much if it was fine before the shoes where changed the hissing sound is probably Viacom from low fluid

hope this helpsI just changed the front brake pads for my %26039;02 VR6 Jetta. After putting everything back togetther, I found ou
Sounds like low brake fluid, yes you will need to purge air again. Also brakes may not be adjusted properly. Also check for any leakage at master cylinder lines etc and also the lines at brake housing at wheel.I just changed the front brake pads for my %26039;02 VR6 Jetta. After putting everything back togetther, I found ou
Why did you bleed the brakes if you were doing a pad slap? Totally not necessary unless you were completely flushing the system.

One other option is that you could have twisted the brake hose when you put the caliper back on. That can cause a soft pedal.

How do i change the brakes on a 1994 acura integra?

I need to figure out how to change the rear and front brake pads on my 1994 acura integra???? Can someone help please??How do i change the brakes on a 1994 acura integra?
First you'll need a caliper tool. It looks like a little box. You can attach it to a rachet and use it to back off the calipers. You can pick it up a the parts store where you get your brake pads.

Then you remove the wheels, use the tool to back off the caliper, remove old pads, put in new ones.

Just remamber to pump the break a little bit before you take the car any where. How do i change the brakes on a 1994 acura integra?
if yeu are not capable of doing it yourself you can always take your car to a machanic and have them change your brake pads for you.

You can also go buy a chilton or haynes manual for your car.

  • Rear wheel took a hit and now squeaks quite loud when I'm driving, except when brake is applied.?

I have a front wheel drive Mitsubishi 380. No too long ago the rear left wheel hit a curb quite hard. The wheel itself survived but now there is a loud squeaking noise coming from the rear wheel. The noise gets quite loud and only lessens as I apply the brakes. Even while driving slowly the squeaking occurs. Also, if I havent driven the car overnight or for a few hours it takes a bit of time for the squeaking to start. I have had a full wheel alignment done and they could not see what was causing the noise. From what I know it's most likely a damaged wheel bearing that is causing the problem but can anyone else suggest what else it could be and how much roughly repair would cost? I have also have the brake pads changed as I thought it couldbe contributing to the squeaking recently but the noise it still there just as before.

ThanksRear wheel took a hit and now squeaks quite loud when I%26039;m driving, except when brake is applied.?
it sounds like a bearing but could be the hub itself suggest you get the mechanic to look at it and give you a written estimate for the repairRear wheel took a hit and now squeaks quite loud when I%26039;m driving, except when brake is applied.?
it could be a wheel bearing or you broke something on the shoes.Rear wheel took a hit and now squeaks quite loud when I%26039;m driving, except when brake is applied.?
Im afraid it is a wheel bearing, I have changed a front bearing by removing the hub assembly and removing the axle nut, then I had to take the hub to have the bearing pressed out, 2hours labor in a shop and a $40 bearing, roughly $220 if I had had it done in a shop

Rear brake pads on a cavalier L reg?

can any 1 give me advice on how to change tha rear brake pads had a look and couldnt even c how to get to the pads , cheers for any helpRear brake pads on a cavalier L reg?
knock the pins out with a sutiable drift, use a lever to remove the old pads and then you need to slowly push the pistons back into the caliper.

clean up the area if its rusty etc, try a new pad you may have to file the new pad top and bottom to create a nice fit, when your happy put some copper grease on the backplate of the pad insert them and replace the pins.

slowly press the brake pedal until it becomes firm, repeat for other side.

if your not at all confident get a mechanic to do the job, this is your brakes after all.Rear brake pads on a cavalier L reg?
there should be 2 bolts holding the brake calipers in place, remove the bolts, then remove the caliper. that will allow access to the brake pads. you will need to compress the piston back into the caliper or it will not go back on with new pads on it. If you don't have the proper tools take it to someone that does and let them do it, you don't want to mess up your brakes.Rear brake pads on a cavalier L reg?
Take the advice of the fist poster, get a garage to do this.Rear brake pads on a cavalier L reg?
But a Haynes manual for the car. They are about æ‹¢12 from Halfords and are a sound investment as they give you step by step instructions on how to do all types of car servicing and repair with pictures and diagrams.Rear brake pads on a cavalier L reg?
its very easy when you no how, But when you get the Calliper off you wind it back in and Not Push, so will need a tool to fit the groves....all you need to do is look for the bolts and the pins, and put them back in the same place....

How often should I change the piston on an rs 125?

went to a bike shop to get carb cleaner (will be going back for brake pads and a chain on wed) and I swear they said to change the piston every 2000 miles.

I've just bought this bike a week ago and like learning how to properly maintain it, but changing the piston sounds like a bloody difficult task. So how often does it need changing, and how hard is it?How often should I change the piston on an rs 125?
Changing the piston and rings is easy, just unscrew the cylinder, take off piston, set on new, set cylinder on.

You should change it every 2000 miles to keep the bike in prime condition. I change every 1500 miles, but im running with a 154cc Polini cylinder, therefore it needs changing more often. How often should I change the piston on an rs 125?
Pistons need to be changed when damaged or worn exessively. New piston always has new rings, circlips and pin (%26amp; bearing if separate). More performance ==more maintenance, and more expensive maintenance too. Racing machines have Very short lifespans, and some models are only sold or supported for a year or 2. 2st pistons are usually easy to change, takes abt an hour or so, assuming no rebore. 2st motors a VERY fussy abt their oils, and you CAN'T skimp or muck about. Stick with what works, and don't compromise. They seize very quickly. How often should I change the piston on an rs 125?
sounds like someone is having you on.to have to change the piston is a big job and one that should only need to be done after many thousand miles or failure, unless this is raceing bike then you may need to change it or the rings for each raceHow often should I change the piston on an rs 125?
You change the piston only when it is broken OR the cylinder is so worn that new piston rings wont take up the slack for good compression.

Changing the piston is about 10 minutes harder to change than new piston rings.

Don't know your mechanical abilities, hard to say how hard! How often should I change the piston on an rs 125?
Whoever told you 2000 miles is on drugs. Theres no need to change a piston, rings, or do a cylinder job unless the bike is low on compression, smoking, or there is some sort of mechanical failure. The piston should last much, MUCH longer than 2000 miles. How often should I change the piston on an rs 125?
2000 miles? Are you joking? You need to go to a new bike shop....they are feeding you some BS.

Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?

I have been advised by a friend that a garage should always undertake any brake maintenence as the insurance company may not pay out in the event of an accident.

Is this hearsay or is this the case? I have looked accross the net for an answer but can only find HOW TO guides for people to work on thir own brakes.

I spent a year working at a garage but that was back in 2005 and I want to know how the ground lies nowadays.

Cheers. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
dude by the same token, some shops shouldnt be allowed to change a flat on a wheel barrow!i wouldnt let em change a dollar.anyway fix your brakes.that is pure bs.

what if you put your own spare tire on and got in a wreck?same thing. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
No, I have been changing my brakes for 35 years. The only way anything could happen is if you really did a bad job and they didn't work because of your fault, %26quot;Gross Negligence%26quot;. Even then how could anybody prove you did it?

If your scared, pay to have it done, if you competent, go for it. Get a book, follow directions, then take the $80 you saved and take out your girlfriend/wife to dinner. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
If you take your time %26amp; know what you are doing. why not. Hey, it's your own ride so go for it.

Get a Haynes Manual or use this site. http://www.haynes.com/products/sfID1/3maIs there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
I think the question is more %26quot;Do I trust my skills as a mechanic enough to change my own brakes?%26quot;. If the answer is 'yes', then get to work. ;-)

In the event of an accident, I think it is more a matter of finding someone to point a finger at (say, if someone wanted to sue) than it is a matter of insurance. Call your agent and see what they say. you may also want to contact your state's insurance omsbudsman's office if you're really concerned. Stuff like that is why you have an insurance omsbudsman. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
you can do any repairs to your own car, that's why %26quot;haynes%26quot; manuals are popular.

The problem occurs if there is an accident and its proven to be some thing you did or changed that is found to be the cause, the insurance company will then not pay out.

The %26quot;classic%26quot; has to be where a car had a crash (no one injured / killed) and the insurance paid out.

The insurance company paid out then sued the person who worked on the car, the person who worked on the car was a friend of the car owner, the car owner told the insurance company all of his friends details.

The friend had written in to a national newspaper asking where he stood, and do the insurance company have a right to sue him.

The answer is yes they can sue, there is nothing he can do other than pay, he should not have done the job in the first place because he is not qualified and as such is not insured to do the job he did.

I don't suppose the two are friends anymore.

So what your friend said in the first place is true, but most people ignore it.Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
You have enough knowledge of mechanics to enable you to complete the repair yourself. There can be little doubt your insurance would be uneffected by doing a home repair.

You will save a lot of cash by DIY. I do it myself without any problem as its a simple enough job with most vehicles. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
Of course you can change your own discs and pads! Otherwise, it wouldn't be legal to sell tools and Haynes manuals, and magazines such as Practical-Classics, which I get every month, would be full of criminal %26quot;how-to-do-it%26quot; guides!

Just be really careful - ANY driver of ANY vehicle, has a legal responsibility to make sure it is ROAD-WORTHY every time it is used - an MOT certificate does not mean that car is legal for a year - it means it passed that test on that day, but you still have to maintain it, and keep it in a safe order. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
You'll have got the message, it's perfectly okay to do the work yourself. The only possible issue is that if you made a mess of it and had an accident as a result the insurers might conceivably say that your car wasn't properly maintained and use that as a way to wriggle out of it. If you do it properly there's no problem at all.

Your friend has a point in that if you're not certain it is indeed best to get a professional to do it for your own sake - you can't afford to make a mistake with brakes. By all means do some research and go ahead if you're confident. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
Methinks your friend is on a different planet. Haynes manuals details brake pad and shoe changing.

Ask your friend to quote the instance where this occurred. Bet he can't because it's a figment of his imagination. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
No you can do it yourself, a lot of people do. Get a service manual if you like ( Chilton or Haynes ) that you can get at the same place you buy your new parts. And when you do the job leave one side together so you have a reference to look at as you do the other side and you'll be fine.Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
your friend is wrong about that.you don,t need a garage but it would be nice this time of year but in the summer just park on a flat surface and start working.i changed my brakes right beside my house. if you have the tools and know-how just start on it. so you might cut your finger, just put a band-aid on and keep working. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
The only advice I can give was that given by my late dad - do the job correctly, be methodical %26amp; check everything you do with a good repair manual ( Haynes etc ). Nowadays it is good practice to take a few digital photos of the correct position of the components in situ before you start dismantling. I have changed the brakes ( pads, discs %26amp; shoes) on most of my cars over the years %26amp; every one passed the MOT test afterwards. Is there anything stopping me changing my own brake discs and pads?
WHAT A LOAD OF BOVINE EXCREMENT, i have changen my own and all my families car brakes, cylinders, discs, pads, etc for years now, i spent æ‹¢20 on the proper wind back tool ( this does make things a hell of lot easier) rather trying to bodge it ( thinking your car needs pistons pushed back in this manner) as long as you, chock the wheels, jack up and support car on axle stands then go for it, as there cannot be any proof you have not done it your self.

Just rembember to pump brakes before going anywhere then test them a few times to be sure, as for the æ‹¢50 - æ‹¢100 labour charge keep it in your pocket, the way petrol is going you will need it lol, all the best have fun working on the cars, i do.

95 240sx s14 rear brake caliper piston problem?

I am in the process of changing the rear brake pads on my s14 and ran into a problem with the left rear caliper. I have the tool for turning the piston in the caliper and have changed the brakes on my s13 many times without any problems. This is the first time changing the pads on this car, and after replacing the pads on the passenger side, I encountered something new when i started on the left side. After spinning the piston clockwise to try and get it seated i found that it wasn't going anywhere. The dimples in the piston looked like the last owner did a number on them and the dust boot was all mangled and loose. Does anyone know how i can get the piston to seat back in? If i remove the piston will i have to bleed the system? by the way, i turned the piston about a quarter turn counter clockwise to see if it would move at all and it did move out a bit.

How do you change the rear brakes on a 2000 Nissan Maxima?

I need to change the rear brake pads on a 2000 Nissan Maxima (emergency) and I can't seem to get the piston back in the caliper to place back on.How do you change the rear brakes on a 2000 Nissan Maxima?
Pistons on Nissans get screwed in . Go to Autozone, Pepboys or the like and get a piston compression tool. It will allow pressure to be put on the piston while you rotate it clockwise. You will feel the stop when the piston gets fully retracted. They go for about $20 bucks for a good tool and they are really worth it.How do you change the rear brakes on a 2000 Nissan Maxima?
    I have a 2000 Nissan Maxima too!

However, I never actually change the breaks on my own, I always take somewhere because I fear that I will forget to screw something and I'll end up not being able to break lol.

How effective is brake squeal spray?

I replaced the rear brake pads on my car not too long ago with some inexpensive pads. The brakes didn't squeal before i changed the pads but they do now and i attribute this to the cheap pads. Will brake squeal spray be a good inexpensive temporary fix?How effective is brake squeal spray?
just spray them out with water all it does is remove the dust but they will probably squeal again and this in not the cheap pads it normally happens when you don't reseal the little this piece of metal that distributes to pressure of the caliper to the pad and it wiggles causing your squealHow effective is brake squeal spray?
I've never seen any spray that is anything other than a cleaner or solvent. I wouldn't spray anything on the brakes. It may work for a little while, but how often are you going to remove your drums to gain access? A better solution would be to remove the shoes one more time and have a machine shop cut either a few shallow chamfered groves across each brake shoe, or one long chamfered groove along ( the long way) each shoe. Not too deep or the shoe may cause problems by falling apart. A good shop knows how to do this. Don't buy junk. For the price of 2 cans of that stupid spray, you could have bought a high quality shoe. How effective is brake squeal spray?
The squeal is due to vibration. Are these discs? then you need to put the spray on the back of the pads, not on the surface that contacts the rotor. How effective is brake squeal spray?
yeah, anti squeal is good. but you have to take the pads off again to properly put it on.

How to change the brakes on 01' Chevy Lumina?

I'm need to change just the front brake pads on a 2001 Chevy Lumina, and I have now idea what I'm doing so I'm asking for your guidance.

If you have any website links that you think would be helpful please post.

Thanks in advance! How to change the brakes on 01%26039; Chevy Lumina?
1.put a piece of wood under the rear tire, %26lt;will prevent car from rolling back%26gt; 2.open the hood remove the cap on the master cylinder if low on oil do not refill, low fluid is a indication or worn out brakes since its a sealed system unless there is a leak you should never have to replace fluid.3.jack up front end either as a whole or one side at a time use a jack stand under the frame rail, lower car onto jack stand.4. pull the wheel off.5 loosen the caliper bolts normally this is a large hex bolt

remove calipers remove pads look at old pads for un even wear or burns

or cracks indication for bad calipers should be even wear on both pads

check the rotor which is what the wheel bolts too, look for blue-ing

or small cracks grooves etc if you find any replace the caliper or have them turned at a machine shop average price in my state 25 dollars a wheel some times and some places are cheaper to buy new ones get a can of brake cleaner at a parts store you'll need to use specific cleaners other wise there might be a residue and you won't stop,6 get a rag and large pair of channel locks put rag over piston in caliper slowly compress with the master cylinder cap off this should be easy

you do not need to bleed brakes that's only when you crack open a Zerk fitting and we haven't done that here, once piston is compressed all the way into the caliper your ready for new pads, first go wash your hands grease is a brake system worst nightmare most disk brakes come with a little tube of glue called anti chatter glue this is applied to the back of the pads let that sit a minute to set then install the new pads carefully put caliper back onto rotor and re bolt down do a visual check to make sure you did not disconnect anything else.

then put the wheel back on that side is done do the same for the other wheel. with all that said and done now you know how to change the brakes on every car with disk brakes they are all the same type system the only thing that varies is to bolts holding the calipers

and the calipers themselves rotors are rotors all the same, with that being done pretty simple kind of makes you wonder why it costs 400 dollars to do a brake job.

    hope this helps

all you need to do is pull the tire off, take a c-clamp and push the caliper piston in, take out 2 bolts and lift the caliper off. change the pads and install the caliper and tighten the bolts. make sure you pump the brakes up after you get done.

How can i reset the brake pad warning light on my new mini?

I have a 2004 Mini One D, the brake pad warning light came on so i have changed the pads. I have also fitted a new sensor as i damaged the old one replacing the pads. How can i reset the warning light that appears on the dash?

Also any idea what torque setting i need to tighten the wheels to?

ThanksHow can i reset the brake pad warning light on my new mini?
I'm looking at Alldata for that car, and do not see brake pad sensors in the schematics. However, if it does have them, where the sensor plugs in to the connector in the wheel well, there should be a voltage reading on one pin on the harness side. That voltage has to be present on the return wire for the light to go off. If the wire is cut or grounded to the rotor, the light will be on. You can unplug the sensors and attach jumpers across the two pins on the harness side to see if there is a problem with the sensors. BMW will sometimes put a sensor on one front wheel and one rear, but I'm not familiar with the Mini, it may have them on all four wheels. You can also check the sensors with an ohm meter. They should have continuity from one pin to the other, with no continuity to ground.

The lug nut torque is 120Nm, or 88.5 ft/lbs.How can i reset the brake pad warning light on my new mini?
i would contact the dealer and have them inspect it. not saying you installed the sensor wrong just saying those cars are tricky and anything could happen. try checking the fuse box in the hood. it might have a sensor reset button. i would just tighten the wheels evenly snug and go over one more time and go alittle more. my neighbor (not a car guy at all) tightened his nuts down to far and snapped one of. had to take it to the dealer and get it fixed. not sure how much it cost him though.

  • Brake pads still okay after 53,000 miles?

I just changed my front brake pads for the first time on my 2000 mazda protege with 53,000 miles on it. I was pleasantly suprised to see that the old pads were not completely worn out.

How long do front pads usually last?Brake pads still okay after 53,000 miles?
Highway driving is the key, stop and go traffic is the fast way to go through brake pads and rotors. Heat is the number cause of brake pad wear, if they don't heat up they last twice as long. If you get 12k on a set of pads or rotors them your in the norm. Even if you don't feel or hear anything different in your brakes, keeping an eye on them with an inspection once and a while is a good idea.Brake pads still okay after 53,000 miles?
Depends on quality of pads plus how you drive. Some only last 25,000 miles some 60,000 miles or more.Brake pads still okay after 53,000 miles?
There is no real answer to that question. It depends on the composition of the brake pads. You could have the regular pads, or semi-metallic, or the new ceramic type, with the ceramic lasting the longest of course.

Then there is the factor of how aggressively the brakes are used. Someone with a light touch will obviously wear the pads down at a slower rate than the person doing panic stops.

You did an amazing job. Generally they recommend brakes be checked yearly, which would be around 12,000 miles.Brake pads still okay after 53,000 miles?
Both Gary and okla have good answers, a another thing to consider is the type of area you live. I live in a fairly rural area and I'll get 50 to 75 K out a set of brakes. I've also worked on cabs near Chicago and the brake were only good for 5,000 miles, LOTS of stop and go.

How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?

    Hi,

My car is 01 Hyundai Sonata.

I recently had a car check up and the precision tune auto shop recommended me to get new ceramic brake pads and rotors and change the transmission oil, motor oil, brake fluid and the battery.

For those works, how much SHOULD it cost for me?, meaning what's the normal price range for the job?

They wanted $640. Do you think that cost makes sense?

I live in Northern California, near San Jose.

I'd appreciate your answers. Thank youHow much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Parts cost is about $60 for pads, $150 for rotors, $20 for tranny fluid, $20 for oil/filter, $10 for brake fluid and $85 for battery prior to labor you already are at $350, so 4.5 hours to do the job seems very good. Now, if you need all this work I don't know, I suggest getting a second opinion and compare with the scheduled maintenance list for your car and follow that. Tranny fluid every 30K, oil/filter 5K, rest of items as needed. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
I would say that is on the high end.

I would say that the most expensive things they are hitting you for are the pad and rotors, and the battery. These auto shops have most consumers accustomed to paying high prices for brake jobs, when in fact they are cheap (strictly speaking about changing the pads and rotars, not the ABS system, etc...).

The battery I'm guessing shouldn't cost over $65. You could do that yourself.

I would try to find a shop that would do it for under $450. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Well under $200 with quality parts if you do it your self. It's really easy stuff.

What is this whistling sound from my brakes from?

Hello, recently i just had my brake pads changed (3 weeks ago) and ever since im getting this SUPER ANNOYING whistling sound from my brakes. how can i fix this issue? im in the process of trying to sell my car and that sound is not very appealing! :( help.

thanks in advance. What is this whistling sound from my brakes from?
Brake noise is common during the first 500 miles after changing the brakes. Some times really cheap brake pads make a lot of noise. What is this whistling sound from my brakes from?
Hi my name is tom- sometimes depending on the pads requires some grease placed in hinges near the pads - or

They take a while to bed in but Id take it back if it continues %26amp; say its making this sound %26amp; a mate said maybe they hadnt used coppaslip on the back of the brake pads to stop the vibration......just an idea but thats something that usually would work. What is this whistling sound from my brakes from?
i've heard of squealing, but never whistling. squealing is an inhearent problem with the new semimetalic brake pads. there is a spray paint like stuff that you spray on the back of new pads (the metal part, not the pad itself) before you install them that has worked good for me. as for whistling, the only thing i can think of is that a dust shield got bent during the brake job. if you got the brake job done at a shop, i would suggest taking it back and have them make it right, since you didn't have this problem before the brake job. i would never let a car leave my garage with any squeals or whistling after doing a brake job. it's just not good business. and if you did the brakes your self, take it apart, try the antisqueal spray (you should be able to find it at most autoparts stores), and make sure the dust plates ane not bent. the dust plates are that flat metal round thing behind the rotors. and as far as them making noise until they break in.....i don't buy it. i've done hundreds of brakes jobs, and they are not right if they make noise anytime!

    Mazda Miata brake noise?

I have a 2001 Mazda Miata. I just had my brake pads changed and now they squeal when I stop. I called the service tech today who said he soaked them in anti-squeal compound before putting them on. He suggested stopping hard about 2-3 times in order to wear off the rust on the rotors, which is causing the squeal.

Does this make any sense to anyone? I don't think its the weather, because they squealed in both rain and shine, morning and night, and regardless of how long I've been driving the car.

Any help and suggestions on how to eliminate the squeal would be greatly appreciated.Mazda Miata brake noise?
he used cheap brake pads -pure and simple -he should have turned rotors and used a good pad (ceramic) duralast (autozone) and wagner (o'reilly's) both are good pads.foreign cars are known to squeal if cheap stuff are used.Mazda Miata brake noise?

i imagine they used after market pads. these are known to squel. also the pads and roaters are not matched, so they will make sound. get real mazda breaks!

cmon man, you ned to know how to do these things and save that $. My brake pads usually run about $20.00 and I put them on myself, you need to have someone show you how to do it and then you practice it til you get it. The rotors usually are $10.00 a piece to turn. You'll save plenty of dough if you do it yourself. Go to the parts store and ask some of the mechanics that come out the store they may be willing to do it for you 4 a cheap price. I'm no mechanic, but I am mechanically inclined. I have women who ask me to change their brake pads all the time, its a good bit of tax free $ too.How much for brake change and to turn the rotors?

    Do brake squealers damage anything?

I know we are suppose to change our brake pads when the squealers make its sound but isn't that damaging something?

I guess I don't quite understand how the squealers make it sounds? It is this piece of metal on the pads with a certain height right? and it grinds against the disc along with the brake pads when the brake pads are used up/low enough?Do brake squealers damage anything?
Correct. When it starts squealing it means the metal tab is beginning to wear into the rotor. It will cut a deep groove if not changed.Do brake squealers damage anything?
No they do not cause any damage to your vehicle. Most of them brake off just as they begin to squeak and goes unnoticed. You should get roughly two sets of front pads to one set of rear shoes. If your vehicle has 4 wheel disc brakes the ratio will be closer, but your front brakes preform about 70% of the stopping power. Hope this helps.Do brake squealers damage anything?
change your pads and it wouldn't hurt to check your rotorsDo brake squealers damage anything?
    Yeah, change those pads.

No, the %26quot;squealers%26quot; aren't hurting anything. It's just a little piece of metal that rubs against the rotor, but it rubs in a different place than your pads are rubbing, so it's not really important... just annoying.

However, those squealers are telling you that there is VERY little pad left. Pretty soon you will no longer clamping a pad to the rotor when you step on the brakes, but the actual steel the pad is attached to. This will sound VERY bad and be very damaging.Do brake squealers damage anything?
the squealers grind against the rotors when the pads get low.

therefore if you dont change them quick, your rotors are garbage in about 2 daysDo brake squealers damage anything?
The first sounds you hear are a warning...the damage risks increase with use. I had the same problem and didn't have enough money and my mechanic let me know I could drive safely for one more week even with the squeal%26quot;. After Then I risked a big repair bill. and...if I were in an accident and they inspected the brakes...I would be liable for not having safe breaks.Do brake squealers damage anything?
yes you are quite right in how a wear indicator/squeeler works.

and yes it tends to put a small grove in your rotor.

that said, whenever you replace brake pads you should have your discs machined, so any warping or run out that has occured with the old pads is taken away. it will help prevent brake vibrations and further warping/ hot spots from occuring.

many people who just change their pads tend to have brake vibration when braking at around 80km/ph (45mph??)Do brake squealers damage anything?
Yes, they do damage the rotor a little - they dig a thin, circular groove in it. This isn't really a problem, since its a little away from where the pad contacts the rotor, and the rotors really should be machines or replaced with each pad change, anyway.Do brake squealers damage anything?
no,they wont hurt nothing, just annoying, but its a indication for you to get your pads changed.it just rubs on the rotors, reminding you,its time for new pads.

I think i need a brake change please help.?

Just recently my car brakes started to squeak. Ive had those brakes for about a year and six months. I dont know if the brakes have dust in them, i dont know. It only squeaks when i slightly press the brake, when i press it all the way its all good. If i do need this brake change how difficult is it to do it your self, i have never changed brakes my self, but i did rebuild a top end of a AMC and made it run again. I have front disk brakes and drums in the back. what kind of brake pads should i get, cause iam getting them from auto zone, and the prices very bettween diffrent brands, $35 is the most ill pay for a pair of brake pads. so which ones should i get, what do i need to keep in mind. thank you for all your helpI think i need a brake change please help.?
OK it sounds like it's about time, dust is a factor but after 20 months it's time. %26quot;Bendix or Raybestes%26quot; are your best bet and you may get another 16 to 20 months. With the rotors and drums if you run a finger nail across the surface and it gets caught or really feels rough they need to be turned, turning the drums and rotors will make the brake shoes and pads last longer. Yes get the %26quot;Auto Repair Manual%26quot; for your car to help you with the job the first time or 2. Good Luck and take it slow the first time or 2.I think i need a brake change please help.?
mate. there's usually inspection slots in the caliber so go look at the pad thickness.I think i need a brake change please help.?
get Bendix brand,, the best is the only way to go with your brakes. I get mine from Advance Auto.I think i need a brake change please help.?
You get what you pay for, get the cheap ones and they blow out black dust and squeal like a retarded pig..... get the better pads, ceramic are the best. They are easy to change, you will need to buy a C-clamp to push the piston back in the caliper for the disc brakes.I think i need a brake change please help.?
You do not know what the problem is and do not know how to do it. Yet you want to fix it your self for $35. I am glad I do not live in Long Beach.

Hey: We mechanic need to make a living too.I think i need a brake change please help.?
Well for starters you get what you pay for. Pads will range anywhere from 6.00 to 60.00. They have the regular elcheapo and then they have extreme duty. You asked a question that leaves a lot of questions open. You need to go somewhere and get a free brake check. There are a number of things that could be making the pads squeak besides actually needing to replace them. You mentioned dust that is one thing. Stuck caliper will give that effect also. Dry slides. Broken anti squeaker. I have even had a bad hose cause that effect. How old is the car.I think i need a brake change please help.?
Yeah, you can do it ,but you might want to buy a Haynes repair manual for your car. It will tell you what, if any ,special tools you will need.

Get the middle priced set of pads and be sure to apply the anti squeal paste or the plastic shims that come with them.

DON'T use a bumper jack or the jack that came with your car unless you place it on stands . Be safe, don't get under ANY car if it's not on stands.I think i need a brake change please help.?
It depends, how hard are you on your breaks? If you ease into everything, they may just be glazed over. If this is the problem, a spin on a grinding wheel should do the trick. As for difficulty, disc breaks are easier to change and drums are a little more complicated.I think i need a brake change please help.?
get semi -metallic pads and shoes about 20.00 ea set The sound you hear by that description is that of the early warning device on the pads to tell you that the pads are ready to be changed-- its a piece of metal that makes a noise because it touches the rotor first when the pads are worn. as for the work it is fair but the trick is that you need some specialty tools ie brake spring pliers, brake spoon, hex or torques wrench/socket 6%26quot; c-clamp and you have to run the rotors and drums down some where to get them cut in the back take both drums off but only change one set of shoes at a time so you can look at the other side if you get lost If you have abs most of them dont like having the fluid pushed back into the master cylinder so you have to clamp the line open the bleeder screw to push the caliper back if you do it yourself get a book hope this helps

How to tell if a disc needs machining (changing brakes)?

Hi. I know how to change the brake pads but how can i tell if i need to take the car to a mechanic to get the disc machined? How to tell if a disc needs machining (changing brakes)?
they should be machined to do the job right but if you didn't get any vibration in the brake pedal when coming to a stop with the old pads on more than likely the rotors aren't warped any and you can get away without machining them. How to tell if a disc needs machining (changing brakes)?
If the vehicle is relatively new ( less than 5 years old ) and the rotors show no obvious signs of %26quot;grooves%26quot;, then it will be OK.........beyond that time frame or if there are grooves in the metal, then a mechanic can use a micrometer to see the thickness of the metal and if the rotor can be turned or notHow to tell if a disc needs machining (changing brakes)?
Uneven wear on the disc surface or reduced surface area contact between disc and brake pads...

However, its not advisable to machine (unless certified expert).

Does anyone know how to change the breaks on a 06 Jetta. I have changed breaks bofore but not on a foreign car. Are there any tips or tricks I should know? cant say for sure, but a jetta's brakes shouldnt be any different than any other car, remove caliper, compress piston, remove old pads, clean everything with brake parts cleaner, install new pads, reinstall calipers, then dont overheat the new pads for a day or so. How can I change rear brakes on a V6 1999 Ford Mustang?

I have recently changed my front brake pads, but when I tried changing my rear ones I wasn't very successful. Lift it by the axle. When U do that they will not drop away from the car. Lift in the middle under the rear Diff. How can I change rear brakes on a V6 1999 Ford Mustang?
Put a jack under the axle or just keep going higher with the jack where it is if you can. The factory jack isn't very safe but it should get the tire off the ground if you have it in the correct spot. You gotta be able to change a tire with it.How can I change rear brakes on a V6 1999 Ford Mustang?
go with putting the jack on the of the rear end.[I/] 9mm, 7mm for the bleeder valve and a c-clamp to compress the caliper. If you possess a caliper compressor this is easier. A great place to get many answers is 3.8mustang.com or .mustangforums.com

the smog pump will be located in the front of the engine and will have a pulley. There are only a few things that operate off the belt: watter pump, alternator, power steering, idler pulleys, and a/c.How can I change rear brakes on a V6 1999 Ford Mustang?
You need to lift the car at a proper jack point and place a jack stand under the rear axle. Do one wheel at a time. If it's drum instead of disc, take a pic of the assembly before removing any springs. clean it first so you can identify the springs by color.

Block the front tires as you will need to release the emergency brake out change the shoes. I don't think there is a smog pump on that year. The smog was changed to catalytic converters and fuel injection systems. How can I change rear brakes on a V6 1999 Ford Mustang?
The rear caliper pistons do not press in. They must be screwed in. If you try to press them in you will damage the park brake mechanism. There are a few different tools made for this from $15.00 UP To $100.00. I have used a large pair of c-clip pliers in a pinch.

How can I change my grip shift and put on rapid fire shifters?

I want to buy rapid fire shifters for my Raleigh M20, but dont know how to take of the grip shift. Also can I change my pad brakes to disk brakes. How can I change my grip shift and put on rapid fire shifters?
Changing the shifters is simple, but you'll need to understand how to adjust the derailleurs as well. Here's a link to Sram's tech docs....they have instructions and diagrams to help you out a lot more than just trying to explain the process. If you visit Shimano's page, they have info there if your new shifters don't have the info with them. http://www.sram.com/en/service/sram/view

If you want to go with disk brakes, you need to be sure you have disk-compatible hubs on your wheels, and also that both your frame and fork have the necessary mounting tabs for the calipers. If they don't, then you'll be spending more money than the bike is worth to upgrade the brakes. In that case, I'd recommend buying a new bike instead....you'll get more bang for your buck and have mostly modern components instead of a retrofitted older bike.

Also, keep this in mind: decent-quality v-brakes that are well adjusted and using good pads, will stop very very well. Disks do stop better, but there's nothing wrong with v-brakes unless you're doing long downhills or riding in wet/muddy/gritty conditions. It might be worthwhile to just set up your v-brakes correctly, possibly changing to a better quality lever if the ones you have are flexy.

Hope this helps. :o)How can I change my grip shift and put on rapid fire shifters?
Loosen the clamp screw that holds the Grip Shift on... it will slide off. If you have Shimano gears then using rapid fire isn't a problem.

You can change to disk is you have disk hubs and front/back disk brake hangers. On a M20 I don't think you do.How can I change my grip shift and put on rapid fire shifters?
MR is correct. If you look closely you will see a small hole in the shifter body that houses an allen key screw. Loosen it, remove the handgrip and brake lever, and slide off the shifter.

Putting discs on the M20 is like putting a jet engine on a biplane. It might be possible, but it would be more expensive than buying a bike with discs already installed.... and the performance would be less than optimum.

I was told that I have 3cm left on my brake pads?

I drive a Toyota SR5. My brakes were checked recently. I was told that I have 3cm left on my brake pads. I do mostly Freeway driving. I almost never have to brake hard.

How much time do I have before I need to change my brakes?

I don't hear squeaking or metal rubbing and the brakes don't feel spongy.I was told that I have 3cm left on my brake pads?
3 cm is over an inch of pad. most cars do NOT come that thick when new.

I think you mean 3 mm (or about 0.12 inches). It is pretty much gone. As to how many miles / time, that really depends on your driving habbit (L.A. driver would need braking more often than say somebody from country side)...

Be safe and go get it replace.

Good Luck...I was told that I have 3cm left on my brake pads?
3cm or 3mm? 3cm seems awefuly thick for a brake pad. If it has 3mm you are probably ok for awhile but invest in getting them replaced at some point in the future. Brakes usually squeal because they are designed with a tiny piece of metal that when the pads are getting low, they rub on the rotor. Doesn't cause any damage but let's you know your going to need to change them in the next 2 months or so.I was told that I have 3cm left on my brake pads?
3mm wow that is not much. You should have heard the tattler rubbing on the brake disk (or you will soon) that tells you that your brakes are worn out. Replace these pads as soon as possible.

If you let them go much longer you may metal to metal contact when you apply the brakes and when that happens you just start adding expense.I was told that I have 3cm left on my brake pads?
3mm is far too less Change pads ASAP.

I'm planning to change my stock pads and go for the EBC green ones to enhance the braking performance,I want to know how long will they last(how many miles) and will they last longer than the stock?

my stock pads always last 15,000mile only.

I own peugeopt 206 1.4 8v.How long will the EBC green stuff brake pads last?
YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET AT LEAST 40 TO 50 THOUSAND FROM ANY VEHICLE.

IF YOU JUST REPLACE THE PADS AND NEVER MACHINE THE ROTORS, THEN THE PADS WILL NOT LAST.

OEM PADS ARE OKAY BUT I ALWAYS USE BENDIX PADS, THEY ARE JUST BETTER IN MY OPINION.

DRIVING STYLES WILL ALWAYS EFFECT THE LIFE OF ALL BRAKE PADS AS WELL.

I DO NOT KNOW WHAT MATERIALS ARE USED IN THE EBC GREEN PADS BUT IF THE MATERIAL IS TO HARD THEN YOU WILL BE REPLACING THE ROTORS THE NEXT TIME.

I need instructions on changing dodge ram brake pad anyone??

i have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 and i need to change the brakes... I want it to become a at home project not something i have to take to the shop... if someone can help me out in DETAILS on how to change the pads or point me to the right direction on how to do it that would be appreciated thanksI need instructions on changing dodge ram brake pad anyone??
It's easy remove the wheel then take off the 2 bolts that hold the brake caliper on remove the caliper and push the piston back with a C clamp. When you do this you will push fluid into the master cylinder reservoir and it may over flow you should loosen the cap on the reservoir but leave it in place so you don't squirt fluid every where. when you are done pushing the piston back replace the pads and re install the caliper. Before you drive the truck push the pedal several times until the pedal feels normal again. If you don't you may not have any brakes because the piston is to far away from the brake pad to apply the brakes. Also when you are pumping the brakes don't push the pedal all the way to the floor just go as far as you normally would for a hard stop because some times dirt and corrosion can build up in the master cylinder and pushing the piston through that can damage the seals.I need instructions on changing dodge ram brake pad anyone??

Can someone please give me a quick run-down on how brakes work and what are the components at work?

My brakes work fine however my mechanic told me I need brakes 'all around'. I'd like to do this myself since I've changed brake pads in the past and he's charging me 350 to install what seem like cheap pads and discs -- so what kind of work into changing disks and pads on my own?Can someone please give me a quick run-down on how brakes work and what are the components at work?
Changing brake pads is not very difficult at all. You have to make sure you have a good level place to do the work. I would do the front pads first, then the rear. Depending upon your vehicle make and model, it may take a special tool to remove the caliper bolts, but essentially you open the hood, remove the cover from the brake fluid container. You do this because when you compress the old pads, the fluid will need somewhere to go, so opening the cover of the fluid reservoir insures that it can overflow if needed.

Remove a wheel, loosen the lower caliper bolt, flip the caliper forward, compress the pads against the caliper cylinder - you can use a %26quot;C%26quot; clamp or a brake pad compression tool (a few bucks), remove the old pads, put in the new pads (be sure to apply grease to the pad shims), put the caliper back into place, tighten the bolt, put the wheel back on, go do the other side.

When finished with the front, pump the brakes a few times to set the calipers tight against the rotor. Go do the back in the same way. Replace the cover to the fluid reservoir and you're done!

It should take no longer than a couple hours tops. Can someone please give me a quick run-down on how brakes work and what are the components at work?
When you depress your brake pedal, your car transmits the force from your foot to its brakes through a fluid. Since the actual brakes require a much greater force than you could apply with your leg, your car must also multiply the force of your foot. It does this in two ways:

    Mechanical advantage (leverage)

Hydraulic force multiplication Can someone please give me a quick run-down on how brakes work and what are the components at work?
A $20 Chiltons or Haynes manual at your local autozone will give you step by step instructions.

It depends on the car, the roads (hilly vs. flat, straight vs. curvy), your driving style (aggressive vs. relaxed, down-shifting vs. extensive use of the brakes), and how heavy the load the brakes have to stop (driver only, full vehicle, or full vehicle + towing a trailer).

Driving like a bat out of hell with a fully loaded car on hilly and curvy roads while towing a trailer will eat up your fuel and brakes like there's no tomorrow. Relaxed driving, an empty car, flat roads, and down-shifting instead of heavy braking can save both fuel and brake pads.

How long is the warranty on the EBC brake pads? 3 months, 1 year, 2 years, lifetime? The above points and the warranty length will give you an idea of how long the EBC pads should last you.

P.S.: Down-shift when taking long hills or mountain roads. It'll save a whole lot of brake pad and it may save your life. Continuously using your brakes for a long time and/or at high speeds will overheat your brakes. This can shorten your brake pad and rotor life. It can also shorten your life. Overheated brakes tend to lose effectiveness. You press harder on the brake pedal and the car slows down less and less, eventually leaving you at the wheel of a runaway car.

that depends on how you use the brakes. if you tend to ride the brake pedal, then you will use up the pads faster. generally though the ebc pads will last much longer than the stock pads will. again though, how much longer is hard to say.

How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car's front brake pads?

I have already bought new break pads from someone, so I only should pay to have them changed. I live in Los Angeles by the way. Please give me an appoximate of what would be reasonable. I'm a student, low on cash.

Thank you.How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car%26039;s front brake pads?
You did a no,no. It would be the same as bringing your own steak to the resturant and asking them to cook it for you. Never bring your parts to a mech and ask them to install them. Now you will pay around $75 to have them put on.How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car%26039;s front brake pads?
They should be able to do it in under an hour, but they will also charge you for shop supplies and will probably come up with some other things that they will try to charge you for, the rotors may need to be turned as well, if they are badly scored they may need to be replaced, I would borrow some tools if you don't have them already and do it yourself, it's an easy job and then you know you won't get screwed by some mechanic that is trying to charge you for work that doesn't need to be done.

Sorry if I offended any repair shops, I just don't trust them and do all of my own work unless it's under warranty. How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car%26039;s front brake pads?
Shop around. One guy may do it for a case of beer whereas another wants a million. That is free enterprize. How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car%26039;s front brake pads?
To do the job right the rotors need turned and the pads installed, Midas charges $79.95 for the job and thats about the cheapest around, it would be cheaper for you if you had a buddy who could do it for you and buy him a case of beer. How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car%26039;s front brake pads?
grab a friends tools and do it yourself,it's unbelievable to me that anyone ever gets a garage to do such simple jobsHow much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car%26039;s front brake pads?
First off it's really best to change the rotors when changing the pads unless the pads were evenly worn and how damaged at all. Also the rotors could be burnt or unevenly warn so it's best to have a mechanic perform a free brake check on that vehicle.

The labour really isn't any different in price if the pads and rotors are replaced at the same time and really it should be more then 45 mins to 1 hr of labour cost tops.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I'd not say anything about changing the pads etc until you have the free test performed and hear from from the mechanic. How much should I pay to have a mechanic change the my car%26039;s front brake pads?
