For the typical back yard mechanic like me, you've got extra time to jack up the wheels and put jack stands under the frame for safety. Then you need the right wrench to remove the caliper bolts which may require a breaker bar to get good leverage on the bolt in many cases. The front caliper pistons can be pushed in with a big C clamp, but rear calipers often need a special tool to turn the caliper back in with. Taking care to get the new pads into the caliper like the old pads you took out and remounting the caliper ends up taking about 3 hours for me and that doesn't count going to get the new pads or cleaning up the tools etc. Rear drum brakes would take longer even if you've done them before (about double the time for me). Of course you may need to take your rotors in to be machined or buy new rotors and install them in some cases.
