Can you tell me how to change the brake pads on my '05 Honda Element?

Either get a service manual (like a Haynes or Chilton manual from an Auto Parts store) and follow the step by step instructions or take it to a reputable shop or the Honda dealer and pay to get the brake pads changed by a professional who knows what they're doing.

The worst system to figure-it-out and do-it-yourself on with no idea what you're doing is the brakes. If you make a dumb mistake and screw up the brakes because you didn't know exactly what you were doing you could kill yourself or others. Can you tell me how to change the brake pads on my %26039;05 Honda Element?
Front or rear? I would definately suggest getting a manual if you are asking how to do it.

With that said, most disc brakes are similar, there is a disc squeezed by a caliper. The pads are held in the caliper and the caliper mounts to the hub via a carrier. There should be two bolts that hold the caliper to it's carrier. On some cars you can just remove one bolt and the caliper will swing away from the disc and you can remove the old pads and install the new ones. There will probably be springs in there with the pads, so before you remove the old pads, make a note or take a few pictures of how the pads and springs fit in the caliper. You may also want to use a special lubricant between the caliper and pad to help quiet sqeeking and sqealing.

-open the hood and open the cover for the brake fluid resevior

-jack up the car and put wheel chocks behind the other tires

-remove the wheel

-remove one or both of the caliper bolts

-separate the caliper from the disc

-take picture of cliper set-up

-remove old pads and springs

-use wood block and c-clamp to push caliper piston back into caliper (make note not to push so much that brake fuid comes back out the resevior)

-install new pads/spring/pad lubricant

-reinstall caliper on carrier

-reinstall bolt(s) and tighten to factory specs.

-reinstall wheel
