Obviously, I don't want to be in the situation where they don't work!!How will I know when my brake pads need changing ?
The brake pads have a built in piece of metal on the frame of the pad that rubs the rotors when the pads are worn down to a certain level..... At that point you will hear a high pitched squeak every time you hit the brakes..... Then its time to change them before you damage the rotors (plus it wont stop as good)....You have probally heard cars brakes squeak when coming to a stop before....How will I know when my brake pads need changing ?

If you dont want to rely on that, go to a mechanic. they will measure how much pad is left and give you a general idea of how many more miles they are good for. You should get your car serviced once a year and if they're worn then it will come up on your service. It's good to ask your garage to specifically check the pads as then they'll probably give you an idea of when they'll need replacing, if they don't need doing at the time. brake pads have a small arm built onto them for exactly this reason. when the pad wears down to the point it should be replaced, the tiny arm actually comes in contact with the rotor and makes a squealing noise. so, once you begin to hear the squealing coming from you brakes, it's time to get them checked out. if you continud driving on them for more than week or two, you will begin to damage the rotor itselfHow will I know when my brake pads need changing ?
I am not sure, but I think that some garages, generally the commercial named ones will do a free check for you. Though, some may say they need changing even if they don't, so be careful. you will hear a squeaking sound from the

front or rear wheels when you are rolling

even if you don't have your foot on the brakes



plus it will probably take you longer to stop than normal

and you will be putting more pressure on the brake pedal

to do the same stop.





those are signs your pads are getting low



once past that you may not hear the squeak at all



then you will hear grinding sound when you press

the brakes



by the time you hear that you are past the point

of the pads being low

and are at the point of messing up your rotors

and brake failure.

You will feel that the brakes become less efficient. You may hear a grinding and feel it through the Brake pedal(vibration) if it is this bad REPLACE NOW!! Jesus, you have been been given some rotten answers! When a car is serviced, usually at least once a year or every 10,000 or 12,000 miles on a new car, the garage should check for brake wear.
